Distribution System
Contoh Kasus:
Wal-Mart and 7-eleven have the same way to optimize the distribution process which is done by
cross docking to greatly reduce inventory cost. But the way they build the logistic network is
different. While Wal-Mart established the distribution center first and the store built in certain area
from distribution center, 7-eleven built the store first and if the few stores in certain area were built
then they create the regional distribution center to satisfy supply to the store. The result is the selling
price in Wal-Mart is lower than 7-eleven.

Factors Influencing Distribution Network Design
At the highest level, performance of a distribution network should be evaluated along two dimensions:
Order Visibility The ability of customers to track their orders from placement to delivery
The ease with which a customer can return unsatisfactory merchandise and the
Returnability
ability of the network to handle such returns.
10
Design Option for A Distribution Network
Managers must make two key decisions when designing a distribution network:

Design Option for A Distribution Network
Manufacturer Storage with Direct Shipping and In-Transit Merge
Unlike pure drop-shipping, under which each product in the order is sent directly from its manufacturer to the end
customer, in-transit merge combines pieces of the order coming from different locations so that the customer gets a single
delivery. Although an increase in coordination is required, merge in transit decreases transportation costs relative to
drop-shipping by aggregating the final delivery.

Distributor Storage with Last-Mile Delivery
From an inventory perspective, warehouse storage with last-mile delivery is suitable for relatively
fast-moving items that are needed quickly and for which some level of aggregation is beneficial.
Auto parts required by car dealers fit this description.

Selecting a Distribution Network Design
A network designer needs to consider product characteristics as well as network requirements when deciding on the
appropriate delivery network. The various networks considered earlier have different strengths and weaknesses.
