GENERATOR DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION

Alarm ---- Nil Shutdown 25% Instant

Possible Causes

1. Internal Fault (winding to winding short circuit)

2. C.T Terminal loose

3. C.T. Failure

4. Cable joint or winding joint failure

Operator Action

1. Study the current trend and perform trouble shooting and Inform to Maintenance
Department
2. Check the C.T Terminals connection tightness
3. Check the any crack on C.T
4. Check the power cable connections at alternator end and breaker end. Check the
cable connection from winding to alternator terminals box
5. Check winding Insulation résistance, Winding resistance

WOODWARD 723 COMMON ALARM

Possible Causes

1. Input Voltage 24V DC fail

2. Speed sensor failed

3. Speed regulation signal failure

Operator Action
1. Check Input voltage at terminals 36 & 37

2. Check sensor and sensor cable and rectify fault item

3. Check the output signal 4 –20 mA from PLC to 723 controller

DRIVE AND NON-DRIVE END BEARING TEMPERATURE

Alarm 90 deg C Shutdown 100 deg C Instant

Possible Causes

1. Lube oil pressure low

2. Lube oil contamination

3. Misalignment of flywheel coupling

4. Bearing material failure

5. Temperature sensor terminal loose connection or sensor fault

6. Lube oil temperature high

Operator Action

1. Check the sensor output trend in WOIS

a) If trend is gradual then stop the engine and inspect the bearing

b) If trend is erratic then by-pass the temperature sensor with prior approval

2. Remove the top half of the bearing and check any peel off

3. Ensure the alignment is normal

4. Check the lube oil quality

MAIN AND THRUST BEARING TEMPERATURE HIGH

Alarm 100 deg C Shutdown 120 deg C Instant

Possible Causes

1. Lube oil flow failure

2. Lube oil contamination

3. Misalignment

4. Bearing material failure

5. Temperature sensor terminal loose connection or sensor fault

6. Lube oil temperature high

Operator Action

1. Check the sensor output trend in WOIS

2. If trend is gradual then stop the engine and inspect the bearing

3. If trend is erratic then by-pass the temperature sensor with prior approval and
rectify the faulty sensor

4. After stopping the engine Pre start the pre lube for 10 minutes and check the oil

Flow

5. Inspect the bearing

6. Ensure the alignment

7. Check the lube oil quality

CHARGE AIR TEMPERATURE IN RECEIVER

Alarm 70 deg C Shutdown 75, 10 Secs

Possible Causes

1. Dirty suction air filter

2. Dirty charge air cooler

3. Air bypassing

4. Ambient temperature high

5. Temperature Sensor faulty

6. LT Water Temperature high

7. HT Water Temperature high

Operator Action

1. Check the sensor output trend in WOIS


a) If Erratic, check the connection and replace the faulty sensor
Note: Sensor should not by passed, as it will limit allowable load
2. Check the filter differential pressure
3. Check the charge air cooler differential pressure
4. Check the ambient air temperature
5. Check the LT and HT water temperature
6. Check the air bypassing

LINER TEMPERATURE HIGH

Alarm 140 deg C Shutdown 145 deg C, Instant

Possible Causes

1. Liner Temperature sensor fault

2. Lube oil contamination

3. Piston ring wear

4. Liner abnormal ovallity

5. Polished inside surface

6. HT water temperature high

7. Lube oil flow failure

Operator action

1. Check the sensor output trend in WOIS


If trend is gradual stop the engine and inspect the liner

If trend is Erratic, check the connection tightness and replace the faulty sensor

2. Check the OMD condition.

3. Check the Liner surface for hot spot

4. Check the lube oil flow

5. Check the Ring failure, Bearing clearance & Screw slackness

6. Check the Pyropipe tightness

EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE INDIVIDUAL

Alarm 500+10s Load reduction 550 +10s Shutdown 550+100s

Possible Causes

1. Thermocouple faulty
2. Constant pressure relief valve wear
3. Faulty injecting valve
4. Injector spring broken
5. Exhaust valve burning
6. Improper tappet clearance
7. Delayed fuel injection
8. High carbon deposited in nozzle ring
9. Low fuel quality

Operator action

1. Check the sensor output trend in WOIS

If trend is Erratic, check the connection tightness and replace the faulty sensor
If trend is gradual check the following points
2. Check difference of C&D temperature

3. Check the fuel rack position

4. Lubricate the fuel rack

5. Adjust the fuel rack position with prior approval

6. Check the tappet clearance

7. Check the injector valve

8. Check the exhaust vale

9. Check the injection time

10. Check the fuel quality

EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE DEVIATION

Auto stop - +/- 75 degree C

Possible Causes

1. Fuel pressure low

2. Sensor fault

3. Tell-tale hole leakage

4. Injector holes clogged

5. High pressure pipe leakage

6. Connection piece crack

7. Injector body crack

8. Faulty head piece valves

9. Rack jammed at higher or lower position

10. FIP Plunger jammed

11. Locking plate bolts broken

Operator action

1. Check sensor output trend of C&D in WOIS

a) If trend is erratic check the sensor connection and replace the faulty sensors

b) If trend is gradual then check the following points

2. Check the leak -off lines

3. Check the fuel rack position and compare with other rack

4. Lubricate the fuel rack

5. Check the tightness and any crack on High pressure pipe

6. Check the tell – tale hole leak and adjust the fuel rack with prior approval

7. If more oil leak in tell – tale hole replace the Fuel injection pump

ELECTRICAL OVERSPEED

Shutdown - 560+2%

Possible Causes

1. Sudden load throw over

2. Governor and actuator failure

3. Speed sensor malfunction

4. Speed setting disturbed in 723

5. Common Fuel racks jammed at higher position

Operator action

1. Check breaker position and engine load

2. Check the Governor load indicator

3. Check Speed sensor connection and replace faulty sensor

4. Ensure the speed setting vale in 723

5. Check the common fuel limiter

6. Check common Fuel rack position and lubricate

MECHANICAL OVERSPEED

Shutdown - 570+2%

Possible Causes

1. Sudden load throw over

2. Governor and actuator failure

3. Speed sensor malfunction

4. Speed setting disturbed in 723

5. Common Fuel rack jammed at higher rack position

6. Electrical over speed failed to function

Operator Action

1. Check breaker position and engine load

2. Check the Governor load indicator3.

3. Check Speed sensor connection and replace faulty sensor

4. Ensure the speed setting vale in 723

5. Check electrical over speed setting

7. Check the common fuel limiter

8. Check common Fuel rack position and lubricate

LUBE OIL PRESSURE TRANSMITTER ALARM AND TRIP

Possible Causes

1. Lube oil transmitter loose connection or transmitter failure

2. Lube oil transmitter line crack or choked

3. Lube oil Filter differential pressure indication

4. Lube oil pump pressure setting screw disturbed

Operator Action

1. Check the transmitter output value in WOIS and compare with local pressure

Gauge , If transmitter value is erratic then by pass the sensor with prior approval

2. Check the transmitter connection tightness and healthiness of the cable

3. Check the lube oil auto filter and safety filter pressure

4. Replace the faulty transmitter

5. Inspect the transmitter pipe line and clear the line choke

LUBE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH TRIP

Possible Causes

1. Pressure switch fault


2. Lube oil pressure switch loose connection or transmitter failure
3. Lube oil transmitter pipe line crack or line choked
4. Lube oil Filter differential pressure indication
5. Lube oil pump pressure setting screw disturbed

Operator Action

1. Check the transmitter output value in WOIS and compare with local pressure

Gauge

2. If transmitter value is erratic then by pass the pressure switch with prior approval

3. Check the pressure switch connection tightness and healthiness of the cable
Check the lube oil auto filter and safety filter pressure

4. Replace the faulty pressure switch

5. Filter differential pressure indication

6. Lube oil pump pressure setting screw disturbed
