WOODWARD OVERSPEED

Shutdown: Engine speed above 565 rpm

Possible Causes

1. Due to load throw / grid disturbance


2. Sensor malfunctioning
3. Electrical over speed fails
4. Governor malfunctioning
5. High fuel rack position

Operator action

1. Analyzing the reason for load throw / grid disturbance


2. Check the sensor wiring for loose connections
3. Check the sensor output, found problem fault sensor can be bypassed
4. Check the electrical over speed settings
5. Check the governor load limit
6. Check the fuel rack stop limiter

OIL MIST DETECTOR ALARM / FAILURE

Alarm: opacity high

Possible Causes

1. Inlet air pressure low (or) negative pressure in the measuring head is too
low (14th LED)
2. High ambient temperature / Electronic temperature
3. Defect in reset button
4. Infrared filter clogged
5. Electronic module defective
6. Reset button blocked

Operator action

1. Local inspection of opacity display


2. 14th LED – Ensure the instrumentation air pressure is more than or equal to
5.0 bar then adjust the pressure reducer so as to increase the airflow rate.
If instrumentation air pressure is less than 3.0 bar, then open starting air
bypass valve to increase the instrumentation air pressure, still alarm is not
normalized, check any air leakage in the device
3. 13th LED - Infrared filter can be cleaned with buds dipped in alcohol
4. 10th or 8th LED – Fresh air circulation to the device can be provided, Device
can be protect against source of heat
5. 7th LED - Check the loose connection Reset button block, found loose
connection additional support can be provided

OMD HIGH HIGH SHUTDOWN

Shutdown: High High Opacity Display

Possible Causes

1. Due to High oil mist in the crankcase


2. Oil carry over in the instrumentation air
3. Malfunction of OMD

Operator action

1. Check locally opacity by LED display


2. If opacity level is high, Check the OMD outlet for any oil mist (or) water
droplet
3. Found oil mist in the device, Open the Crankcase door for visual
inspection
4. Check the water transducer value is with in the safe limits
5. Check the Crankcase Vent for any water vapour, droplets
6. Found OMD malfunctioning we can go for bypassing the OMD electrically
both auto stop and shutdown with prior approval

7. OMD outlet can be collected for further observation


8. Check the instrumentation air bottle drain line for oil carryover, and dryer
performance. Found dryer efficiency is too bad dryer unit can be bypassed
9. Check the sintered bronze filter in the PRV and OMD unit
TORSIONAL VIBRATION

Alarm: 0.6 Shutdown: 0.8

Possible causes

1. Unequal combustion in any one of the cylinders


2. Sensor malfunction
3. Engine Critical Speed
4. Misalignment
5. Wacky talky high frequency interference

Operator action

1. Reduce the load as much as possible


2. Check the Exhaust gas temperature deviation of the cylinders
3. Found deviation is more, check the fuel rack of the corresponding FIP
4. Check the causes for the shutdown, which will cause the excessive
vibration
5. Check sensor terminal connection, and clearance between flywheel and
sensor, found carbon particles in flywheel, clean the surface.
6. Wacky talky transmitting signal can cause the interference to the torsional
vibration unit, so wacky talky can be switched off while working inside
the CFE panel
7. Vibration can be measured in the mounting area by SPM meter

HT WATER OUTLET TEMPERATURE A/B BANK


Alarm: 100 deg C Load Reduction:105 deg C + 10 sec Shut Down: 110 deg
C

Start block: 50 deg C

Possible causes

1. HT outlet water temperature sensor A/B bank malfunctioning


2. Engine is over loaded
3. High ambient temperature
4. Cooling system is dirty (internally or externally)
5. Temperature control valve is operating improperly
6. Valves in wrong position
7. Water pump failure
8. Radiator cooler failure
9. Entering of exhaust gas into the HT water system
10. Ambient temperature is high

Operator actions

1. Check the local temperature gauge both A&B banks. If HT water


temperature outlet sensor is erratic, we can go for bypassing / replacing
the faulty HT water outlet temperature thermometer. (Bypassing the
sensor will reduce the load on the engine. so after bypassing, engine has to
be operated manually with prior approval)
2. Engine load can be reduced
3. Temperature control valve is malfunctioning, bypass valve can be opened
if provided.
4. Check the valve position of the HT water outlet / inlet lines
5. Check the radiator fan motors running status and fins
6. Check the radiator vent line for exhaust gas

HT WATER INLET PRESSURE LOW

Alarm: 2.0 bar shut down: 1.5 bar


Possible causes

1. Leakage in the HT water system


2. Pressure Transducer malfunctioning
3. Low water level in the expansion vessel
4. Valves in the cooling system are in the wrong position
5. Cooling water pump is defective
6. Entering of exhaust gas into the HT water system
7. Leakage in the Charge air cooler

Operator actions

1. Check the leakages in the radiators, pipelines. If found leakage it can be


arrested while engine is running condition or stop the engine and arrest
the leak
2. Check the pressure transducer output. If it deviates, it can be bypassed
with prior approval and the pressure should be monitored locally
3. If the water level is low, fill the expansion tank by staring the
maintenance water pump. The reason for loss must be determined and
remedied
4. Vent the HT water system in the Radiator unit, thermostat valve, and
Pressure transducer
5. Check the HT water pump performance
6. Check the water in the Charge air cooler drain line
7. Check the valve position of the engine outlet / inlet lines

LT WATER INLET PRESSURE LOW

Alarm: 2 bar shut down: 1.5 bar

Possible causes

1. Leakage in the LT water system


2. Pressure Transducer malfunctioning
3. Low water level in the expansion vessel
4. Valves in the cooling system are in the wrong position
5. Cooling water pump is defective
6. Leakage in the Charge air cooler, lube oil cooler.
Operator actions

1. Check the leakages in the radiators, pipelines. If found leakage, it can be


arrested while engine is running condition or stop the engine and arrest
the leak
2. Check the pressure transducer output. If it deviates, it can be bypassed
with prior approval and the pressure should be monitored locally
3. If the water level is low, fill the expansion tank by staring the maintenance
water pump. The reason for loss must be determined and remedied
4. Vent the LT water system in the Radiator unit , thermostat valve , Pressure
transducer, lube oil cooler
5. Check the LT water pump performance
6. Check the water in the Charge air cooler, and lube oil cooler drain lines.
7. Check the valve position of the engine outlet / inlet lines.

GENSET WINDING TEMP U, V & W PHASES

Alarm: 140 deg C Auto stop: 150 deg C

Possible causes

1. In adequate cooling to the windings


2. High ambient temperature or Engine hall temperature
3. Failure of supply air fans
4. Generator over load current
5. RTD malfunction
6. Dirty air filters
7. Hot spot in the Stator winding.

Operator action

1. Reduce the load as much as possible


2. Check generator current in WOIS any variation, If found current is more
inform to maintenance and check the other parameters
3. Check the supply air fans are running or not. If it is not running check the
wire connections and interlocks
4. Check the Alternator filter clogged or not, if it is clogged alternator filter
can be cleaned and put back into service, provided additional cooling can
be ensured
5. Check the RTD terminal connections, for conformation spare RTD can be
put into service
6. Check the supply air filters and ensure the engine hall environment is
clean.

FUEL OIL PRESS LOW

Alarm: 4 Bar Start block: 2 Bar

Possible causes

1. Fine filter is clogged


2. Fuel feeder pump or feeder motor failure
3. Quick closing closed by air leak or malfunction
4. Leakages in fuel pipelines
5. Booster pump or motor failure
6. PRV malfunctioning
7. Fuel oil pressure transmitter malfunction

Operator action

1. Check the fuel oil pressure transmitter


2. Check the fine filter is clogged (or) the valve is in the wrong position
3. Adjust the fuel pressure, temperature and viscosity
4. Check for possible leaks in fuel pipelines
5. Check the Fuel feeder pump running status
6. Check the quick closing valve position and air leakage
7. Replace the new filter cartridges, if filter is clogged
8. Check the PRV settings of feeder, booster, and fuel oil unit
9. Check HFO feeder pump suction filter chocked or not

LUB OIL INLET TEMP


Alarm: 80 deg C Auto stop: 85 deg C Start block: 40 deg C

Possible causes

1. Faulty thermometer
2. Engine is overload
3. Worn cylinders, pistons and rings (blow-by)
4. Bad injection timing
5. The cooling system is not working properly
6. High ambient temperature
7. The valves in the LO system are in the wrong position.
8. The wet sump oil level is high or low
9. Temperature control valve is operating improperly
10. The LO cooler is dirty
11. Inadequate aspirating air pressure

Operator action

1. Check the thermometer, found faulty go for bypassing / replacing the


thermometer
2. Check LT inlet pressure of lube oil cooler (or) air in the LT water system,
inlet / out let valves are closed condition
3. Check the inlet/outlet temperatures on the LO cooler and compare with
the temperatures in the test run report
4. Check the thermostatic valve operation
5. Check the valves in the LO system are in the wrong position.
6. Maintain the sump level around 29 cm

BOILER LOW LOW LEVEL

Alarm: Low level Auto stop: Low Low level Start Block: Yes

Possible causes

1. Feed water pump discharge pressure low


2. Faulty level sensor
3. Motorized valve controller malfunctioning
4. Faulty motorized valve
5. Low low level in the feed water tank
6. Passing in the blow down line / drain valve open condition.

Operator action

1. Safety bypass the low level boiler to avoid the auto stop
2. Check the boiler level in local water level indicator, check the feed water
discharge pressure found normal ,and check the level sensor output
signal.
3. Check the motorized valve controller settings, found disturbed adjust
settings.
4. If water level is found low low level and engine goes to auto stop,
5. Check the feed water pump is running or not, and other pump is in stand
by mode.
6. Check feed water pressure is more than 8 bar and the PRV of feed water
line.
7. If valve controller is working well, check the Motorized valve stem for any
bend, open the bypass valve for water filling up to required level, and
reset the alarm in local panel for starting the engine again.
8. Meanwhile if engine is unloading, breaker can opened and again start
command can be given.

STARING AIR PRESSURE LOW

Alarm: 18 bar Auto Stop: 8 bar Start Block: 15


bar

Possible causes

1. Leakage in the starting air system


2. Malfunctioning of main starting air valve
3. Problem in starting air compressor
4. Pressure transmitter malfunctioning
5. Air bottle pressure dropped

Operator actions

1. Ensure all the starting air compressors are running, if not running check
the supply and pressure switch.
2. If the engine is stopped, do not start the engine while the air pressure is
low.
3. Check the pressure transmitter sensor, and found erratic bypass the sensor.
4. Check that the starting air valves before the engine are open.
5. Check for possible leaks in the staring air system
6. Open the staring air valves on the staring air bottle and on the inlet to the
engine.
7. Repair possible leaks on the staring air system.

CONTROL AIR PRESSURE LOW

Alarm: 5 bar Auto Stop: 4 bar

Possible causes

1. Leakage in the control air system


2. Problem in starting air compressor
3. Control air non-return valve malfunction
4. Pressure transmitter malfunctioning

Operator actions

1. Ensure all the starting air compressors are running, if not running check
the supply and pressure switch
2. If the engine is stopped, do not start the engine while the air pressure is
low
3. Check the pressure transmitter sensor, and found erratic bypass the sensor.
4. Check that the starting air valves before the engine are open.
5. Check for possible leaks in the control air system.
6. Ensure the blockage in NRV.
7. Open the staring air valves on the staring air bottle and on the inlet to the
engine.
8. Repair possible leaks on the staring air system.

EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE BEFORE TURBOCHARGER


Alarm: 580 deg C +10 sec Auto stop: 600 deg C

Possible causes

1. In efficient combustion
2. Charge air temperature too high
3. Excessive deposits in cylinder head inlet or exhaust ports
4. Firing time delay
5. Injection nozzle tip failure
6. Fuel quality poor

Operator action

1. Check the FIP fuel rack position


2. Check the peak pressure and SFC
3. Charge air cooler clogged on waterside or dirty on airside
4. Charge air inlet temperature high
5. Deposit in the cylinder head inlet or out let port can be cleaned.
6. Nozzle rings can be cleaned.

EMERGENCY STOP CFC / CFE PANELS

Shut down: Yes Start Block: Yes

Possible causes

1. Emergency button pressed


2. Loose connection.
3. Fault in the switch.
4. Common PLC Failure.

Operator action

1. Conform to persons for any major problem for pressing the Emergency
button.
2. Check the loose connections
3. Check the function of switch
4. Check PLC communication cable tightness
