Examination Card 1

1. Read the text and answer the questions.

Once upon a time, fashion was only for the rich. Paris was the centre of the fashion world, and
everyone else tried to copy the top French designers. But now fashion is a much more
international matter. London, like other big European cities, has a large number of its own
talented designers. Street styles are not created by big fashion designers. The British don't think
about fashion very much. Most people go down to their nearest shopping street and buy
something from a "chain" store. The most popular of these stores, with a shop in every town, is
"Marks and Spencer". It is Britain's favourite store. It started more than a hundred years ago
when a young Polish immigrant, Michael Marks, had a stall in Leeds Market. He didn't have
many things to sell: some cotton, lots of buttons and a few shoe-laces. Ten years later, he met
Tom Spencer and together they started Penny Stalls in many towns in the north of England.
Today there are more than 500 branches of M&S all over the world.

My Summer Holidays
All the people enjoy summer holidays very much. It is a great pleasure to have a rest after a whol
e year of hard work or study. People like to travel during their summer holidays. Some people go
abroad to see new countries, some people prefer to go to the country-side to enjoy country-life fa
r from noise and fuss of big cities.
Some people like to spend their holidays in cities, visiting theatres, museums and going sightseei
ng. But a great number of people go to the seaside in summer.
I like to have rest at the seaside best of all. I do not like crowds when I am on holiday. My family
and I always have our holiday on the coast. Sea and sunshine, that is what we look forward to ev
ery summer. Hotels at the large seaside towns are rather expensive, so we usually go to a holiday
camp.
Last year we spent our holidays in such a camp. Each day was full of small joys. We swam in the
sea, lay in the sun, played different games and had a wonderful time. We lived there for about a
month and did not even notice when the time came for us to return home. The time flew very qui
ckly. It was a wonderful rest.
