CDT5- Lecture Summary- Key Takeaways

Analysis of Single stage C.C amplifier using Simplified Hybrid model:
Common collector amplifier is also called as Emitter follower. i.e. emitter voltage (Vo)follows
the i/p voltage(Vi).
In CC configuration
o Input terminals are Base and Collector, to which source is connected
o Output terminals are Emitter and Collector, to which load is connected
i.e. Collector is common to i/p and o/p and also connected to ground from ac point of view.

STEP 1: Draw the C.C. amplifier circuit for which analysis is to be carried out, as shown.

Single stage CC amplifier (or) Emitter Follower

STEP 2: Obtain an a.c. equivalent circuit for the given amplifier circuit by following:

o Set DC sources to be zero by following:

 Short the terminals  for DC voltage source

 Open the terminals  for DC current source
o Short the coupling and by-pass capacitors

STEP 3: Replace the active device (i.e. BJT) by simplified hybrid model as shown:

Output Impedance (ZO):

General procedure to obtain Zo:
i) Set all active a.c. sources to be zero
ii) Remove Load (if any)
iii) Drive the o/p terminals with an external a.c source
By following above procedure, the circuit to find Zo is shown below:

CDT5 - LECTURE SUMMARY
Important features of Emitter Follower:
i. Input impedance is very high (up to 500KΩ)& output impedance is very low (few ohms).
Due to these features, it can be used as impedance matching device.
i.e. it matches high o/p impedance of one circuit to the low i/p impedance of next stage.
Thereby transfers max. power from source to load as shown.

The i/p impedance of CE amplifier acts as a load for source. As Zilow, more current is
drawn from source and hence more drops take place in Rs unnecessarily and little only
transferred to i/p of CE amplifier. Similarly, o/p section acts as a source (to the load R L)
and hence o/p impedance is acts as internal resistance. As Zo is high (i.e. internal
resistance of CE amplifier is high) w.r.t RL, only little voltage transferred to load.
This problem can be solved by using emitter follower as shown:

ii. Current gain is very high and voltage gain is nearly one. ( ), due to these
features it can be used as Buffer or driver amplifier.

Applications of CC amplifier:
o Impedance matching device
o Buffer amplifier
