COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
(See section 10 and rule 13)
The following specification particularly describes the disclosure and the manner in
which is to be performed.
1
FIELD OF INVENTION
BACKGROUND
[0002] Body fluids refer to liquids within the human body or released by the human
body. The body fluids could be blood, saliva, mucus, sweat, and the like. Based on the
properties of the body fluids released or secreted by a body of a user, the health issues
that the corresponding user may be suffering from can be determined, so that the user
can take preventive measures. The health issues could be cardiac arrest, heart attack,
stress, anxiety, cystic fibrosis, cancer, or the like. There are multiple approaches
implemented to detect the current health condition of the user. More specifically, the
multiple approaches correspond to stress indicators. However, some of such multiple
approaches measure stress by calculating the difference between regular heartbeats
through photoplethysmography (PPG) or simply by optical means. Since PPG helps
in measuring the variability in time intervals, it is an inaccurate measurement of the
stress level of an individual. Therefore, such multiple approaches are less efficient,
less reliable, less practical, and expensive, and hence least used by common people.
[0003] Hence, there is a need for an improved apparatus and method to discern one
or more health issues from body fluid analysis which addresses the aforementioned
issues.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
2
upon generation of the corresponding one or more body fluids by a body of the first
user when the corresponding at least one patch attachment is worn by the first user.
The first patch layer also includes an arrangement of a plurality of channels positioned
below and in association with the semipermeable membrane. The corresponding
plurality of channels is adapted to channelize the one or more body fluids received
towards a central portion of the first patch layer. The plurality of patch layers also

measured at the third patch layer with a processing subsystem via at least one
communication medium to discern the one or more health issues corresponding to the
first user from the body fluid analysis.
3
patch layers includes a first patch layer. The first patch layer is adapted to receive one
or more body fluids in real-time via a first semipermeable membrane upon generation
of the corresponding one or more body fluids by a body of the first user when the
corresponding at least one patch attachment is worn by the first user. The first patch
layer is also adapted to pass the one or more body fluids forward via a unidirectional
valve. The plurality of patch layers also includes a second patch layer positioned
adjacent to the first patch layer. The second patch layer is adapted to dissolve the one
or more body fluids into a first predefined fluid stored in the second patch layer. The
second patch layer is also adapted to pass a first fluid of the one or more body fluids
forward via a second semipermeable membrane, and retain a second fluid of the one
or more body fluids based on a density of the one or more body fluids, when the one
or more body fluids are pressurized by a continuous reception of the one or more body
fluids via the unidirectional valve. The second fluid is denser than the first fluid. The
second fluid corresponds to a health issue discerning fluid. The second patch layer
includes one or more first sensors adapted to measure one or more first parameters
associated with the second fluid of the one or more body fluids upon passing the first
fluid of the one or more body fluids forward. Further, the plurality of patch layers also
includes a third patch layer positioned adjacent to the second patch layer. The third
patch layer is adapted to dissolve the first fluid of the one or more body fluids into a
second predefined fluid stored in the third patch layer. The apparatus also includes a
communication unit mechanically coupled to the one or more straps. The
communication unit is configured to communicate the one or more first parameters
measured at the second patch layer with a processing subsystem via at least one
communication medium to discern the one or more health issues corresponding to the
first user from body fluid analysis.
[0006] In accordance with yet another embodiment, a method for discerning one or
more health issues from body fluid analysis is provided. The method includes
positioning a plurality of patch layers inside of at least one patch attachment mounted
on one or more straps. The method also includes wearing the at least one patch
attachment having the corresponding plurality of patch layers, by positioning the
corresponding at least one patch attachment under an armpit of a first user. Further,
the method also includes receiving one or more body fluids in real-time, upon
generation of the corresponding one or more body fluids by a body of the first user.
4
Furthermore, the method also includes segregating a first fluid of the one or more body
fluids and a second fluid of the one or more body fluids from the one or more body
fluids received. Furthermore, the method also includes measuring one or more first
parameters associated with the second fluid of the one or more body fluids upon
segregation. Furthermore, the method also includes measuring one or more second
parameters associated with a current health condition of the first user in real-time upon
measuring the one or more first parameters. Furthermore, the method also includes
communicating at least one of the one or more first parameters and the one or more
second parameters with a processing subsystem through at least one communication
medium for discerning the one or more health issues corresponding to the first user
from body fluid analysis. Furthermore, the method also includes establishing a
communication link between the processing subsystem and the communication unit
upon registration of the first user. Furthermore, the method also includes receiving one
or more inputs from the first user upon establishing the corresponding communication
link, wherein the one or more inputs corresponds to health-related information of the
first user. Furthermore, the method also includes receiving at least one of the one or
more first parameters and the one or more second parameters from the communication
unit upon receiving the one or more inputs. Furthermore, the method also includes
performing the body fluid analysis on the one or more first parameters associated with
the second fluid of the one or more body fluids based on predefined fluid-related
criteria. Furthermore, the method also includes discerning the one or more health
issues corresponding to the first user in real-time based on at least one of a result of
the body fluid analysis, a health-related history associated with the first user, the one
or more inputs, the one or more second parameters, and standard health issues-related
information. Furthermore, the method also includes generating one or more
suggestions corresponding to an improvement in the current health condition of the
first user based on standard health improvement-related information, upon discerning
the one or more health issues corresponding to the first user. Furthermore, the method
also includes generating an alert to a second user based on the one or more health
issues discerned by the fluid analysis module, upon generating the one or more
suggestions by the health improvement suggestion module, wherein the alert
corresponds to information regarding the current health condition corresponding to the
first user.

illustrative and not intended to be limiting.
7
[0018] In the following specification and the claims, reference will be made to a
number of terms, which shall be defined to have the following meanings. The singular
forms “a”, “an”, and “the” include plural references unless the context clearly dictates
otherwise.
8
second user may have to be alerted about the same, for the second user to become
available and assist the first user in recovering.
[0021] In one embodiment, the apparatus (10) may be a wearable device. The
apparatus (10) includes at least one patch attachment (20) mounted on one or more
straps (30). In one embodiment, the at least one patch attachment (20) may include a
predefined shape including a butterfly shape, a circular shape, or the like. Further, the
at least one patch attachment (20) may include a base (40) having an extended rim
attachment (50) at one or more edges of the base (40), wherein the corresponding
extended rim attachment (50) may be perpendicular to the base (40). In one exemplary
embodiment, the extended rim attachment (50) may be a permanent extended rim
attachment. The at least one patch attachment (20) is adapted to receive a plurality of
patch layers (60) operatively coupled with each other. Further, the extended rim
attachment (50) may be adapted to hold the plurality of patch layers (60) received in
place. In such embodiment, the base (40) may have adhesive material on an internal
surface of the base (40), to temporarily affix the corresponding plurality of patch layers
(60) to the base (40), thereby preventing loose fit. Also, in an embodiment, the at least
one patch attachment (20) may be composed of a predefined material such as, but not
limited to, rubber, leather, elastomer, or the like. Similarly, in an embodiment, the one
or more straps (30) may also be composed of the predefined material.
[0022] The at least one patch attachment (20) is adapted to be positioned under an
armpit of the first user upon receiving the plurality of patch layers (60). In one
embodiment, the at least one patch attachment (20) may have to be placed such that
the plurality of patch layers (60) is facing towards a skin of the first user. The plurality
of patch layers (60) includes a first patch layer (70). In one embodiment, the first patch
layer (70) of the plurality of patch layers (60), may be actually touching the skin of
the first user. Further, in one embodiment, the one or more straps (30) may be provided
with one or more fastening means to fasten the corresponding at least one patch
attachment (20) to the body of the first user. Thus, in one embodiment, the at least one
patch attachment (20) may be worn by the first user by wrapping the one or more
straps (30) around a shoulder of the first user, thereby positioning the corresponding
at least one patch attachment (20) under the armpit of the first user. Moreover, in one
9
embodiment, the one or more fastening means may include a Velcro, one or more
buttons, one or more hooks, or the like.
[0023] Basically, as the body releases the one or more body fluids, the first patch
layer (70) may have to be able to receive the same. More specifically, in one
embodiment, the first patch layer (70) may have to be able to receive the one or more
body fluids including sweat, and may not be receiving mucus, unwanted denser
substance, or the like. Thus, the first patch layer (70) includes a first semipermeable
membrane (80) adapted to receive the one or more body fluids in real-time, upon
generation of the corresponding one or more body fluids by the body of the first user
when the corresponding at least one patch attachment (20) is worn by the first user.
The first patch layer (70) also includes an arrangement of a plurality of channels (90)
positioned below and in association with the first semipermeable membrane (80). The
corresponding plurality of channels (90) is adapted to channelize the one or more body
fluids received towards a central portion of the first patch layer (70). The plurality of
patch layers (60) also includes a second patch layer (100) positioned adjacent to the
first patch layer (70). The second patch layer (100) includes a central tube (110)
including one or more walls having a second semipermeable membrane (as shown in
FIG. 2). The second patch layer (100) also includes a first predefined spacing
surrounding the one or more walls externally, and including a first predefined fluid.
The central tube (110) is adapted to diffuse a first fluid of the one or more body fluids
received from the central portion of the first patch layer (70), into the first predefined
fluid by osmosis through the second semipermeable membrane, based on a retention
time possessed by the corresponding first fluid. The central tube (110) is also adapted
to pass a second fluid of the one or more body fluids along a length of the central tube
(110) upon diffusion.
[0024] Further, the plurality of patch layers (60) also includes a third patch layer
(120) positioned adjacent to the second patch layer (100). The third patch layer (120)
is adapted to dissolve the second fluid of the one or more body fluids into a second
predefined fluid stored in the third patch layer (120). The second fluid corresponds to
a health issue discerning fluid. Therefore, in order to discern the one or more health
issues of the first user, one or more properties of the second fluid may have to be
examined. Thus, the third patch layer (120) includes one or more first sensors (130)
10
adapted to measure one or more first parameters associated with the second fluid of
the one or more body fluids upon dissolving in the second predefined fluid. Then, the
one or more first parameters may have to be analyzed. Thus, the apparatus (10) also
includes a communication unit (140) mechanically coupled to the one or more straps
(30). The communication unit (140) is configured to communicate the one or more
first parameters measured at the third patch layer (120) with a processing subsystem
(150) via at least one communication medium to discern the one or more health issues
corresponding to the first user from the body fluid analysis.
[0025] Additionally, there is a possibility that the first user may be suffering from
the one or more health issues, detection of which may not be possible from the body
fluid analysis. Thus, in one exemplary embodiment, the apparatus (10) may also
include one or more second sensors (160) mounted on the one or more straps (30). The
one or more second sensors (160) may be adapted to measure one or more second
parameters associated with a current health condition of the first user in real-time when
the corresponding at least one patch attachment (20) is worn by the first user. The one
or more second sensors (160) may include a pulse oximetry sensor, an
Electrocardiogram sensor, or the like. In one embodiment, the one or more second
parameters may include a blood oxygen level, a heart condition, or the like. Therefore,
the one or more second parameters may also have to be analyzed to discern the one or
more health issues that the corresponding first user may be suffering from. Thus, in
one embodiment, the communication unit (140) may also be configured to
communicate the one or more second parameters measured using the one or more
second sensors (160) with the processing subsystem (150) via the at least one
communication medium to discern the one or more health issues corresponding to the
first user.
11
channels. As used herein, the term “microfluidic channels” refers to channels that are
having dimensions in microscales and allow for the handling of liquid with volumes
typically in a range of nanoliters to microliters. Further, in one embodiment, the first
predefined fluid (170) present in the second patch layer (100) may include a soapy
solution, milk of magnesia, mild detergent, household ammonia, water, or the like.
Also, in an embodiment, the first predefined fluid (170) may have to be with a high
pH value and safe for human contact. In one embodiment, when the one or more body
fluids (180) may correspond to the sweat, the first fluid of the one or more body fluids
(180) may include eccrine sweat. As used herein, the term “sweat” refers to a
transparent biofluid with low tonicity and slightly acidic nature with a mean potential
of hydrogen (pH) of about 6.3. Basically, the main content of the sweat is water. Other
substances of the sweat may include nitrogenous compounds such as amino acids and
urea, metal and nonmetal ions such as potassium, sodium, and chloride ions,
metabolites including lactate and pyruvate; and xenobiotics such as drug molecules.
Further, as used herein, the term “eccrine sweat” refers to a type of sweat that is
released by an eccrine sweat gland to maintain homeostasis, primarily by stabilizing
body temperature upon evaporation of sweat from the skin. In one embodiment, when
the one or more body fluids (180) may correspond to the sweat, the second fluid of the
one or more body fluids (180) may include the apocrine sweat. As used herein, the
term “apocrine sweat” refers to a type of sweat that is released by an apocrine sweat
gland during anxiety and stress-inducing situations. The apocrine sweat is larger and
opens into hair follicles.
[0027] Moreover, as mentioned above, the central tube (110) is adapted to diffuse
the first fluid of the one or more body fluids (180) into the first predefined fluid (170),
based on a retention time possessed by the corresponding first fluid. Also, the central
tube (110) is adapted to pass the second fluid of the one or more body fluids (180)
along the length of the central tube (110) upon diffusion. As used herein the term
“retention time” refers to a time that a solute spends in a column or it can be defined
as the time spent in the stationary and mobile phases. The longer retention time
depends on the interaction of the analyte with the stationary phase. The stronger the
interaction, the more will be the retention time. Thus, as the eccrine sweat possess a
longer retention time than the apocrine sweat, the eccrine sweat may be diffused into
the first predefined fluid (170) by osmosis through the second semipermeable
12
membrane (190), and pass the apocrine sweat along the length of the central tube (110)
upon diffusion of the eccrine sweat. Furthermore, in one embodiment, the second
predefined fluid (200) of the third patch layer (120) may include a soapy solution, milk
of magnesia, mild detergent, household ammonia, water, or the like. Also, in an
embodiment, the second predefined fluid (200) may have to be with a high pH value
and safe for human contact. Also, in one embodiment, the one or more first sensors
(130) may include at least one of a density sensor, a viscosity sensor, an acidity sensor,
and the like. In one exemplary embodiment, the density sensor may be a Micro-
Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) density sensor. Also, in one embodiment, the
one or me first parameters may include at least one of a density, a viscosity, an acidity
level, and the like of the corresponding second fluid dissolved in the second predefined
fluid (200).
[0028] Basically, in an embodiment, when the one or more body fluids (180) may
correspond to the sweat, and as the pH of the apocrine sweat corresponding to about
6 to about 7.5, when a concentration of the apocrine sweat may increase, then the
second predefined fluid (200) may become more acidic. This may be detected by the
one or more first sensors (130) such as the acidity sensor. Later, a variation in the
acidity of the second predefined fluid (200) may have to be analyzed to discern the
one or more health issues that the corresponding first user may be suffering from.
Thus, the one or more first parameters measured may be shared with the processing
subsystem (150) using the communication unit (140). In one embodiment, the
communication unit (140) may include a Bluetooth device, a wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi)
device, or the like. Also, in one embodiment, the at least one communication medium
may include a wired medium or a wireless medium.
[0029] FIG. 3 is a block diagram representation of the apparatus (10) of FIG. 1 with
an elaboration of the processing subsystem (150) in accordance with an embodiment
of the present disclosure. In one embodiment, the processing subsystem (150) may be
hosted on a server (210). In one exemplary embodiment, the server (210) may include
a cloud server. In another exemplary embodiment, the server (210) may include a local
server. The processing subsystem (150) may be configured to execute on a network
(not shown in FIG. 1) to control bidirectional communications among a plurality of
modules. In one embodiment, the network may include a wired network such as a local
13
area network (LAN). In another embodiment, the network may include a wireless
network such as wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), Bluetooth, Zigbee, near field
communication (NFC), infra-red communication (RFID), or the like. The processing
subsystem (150) may include a communication module (220). The communication
module (220) may be configured to establish a communication link with the
communication unit (140) upon registration of the first user. Basically, for the first
user to know about the one or more health issues, a remedy for the corresponding one
or more health issues, or the like, the first user may have to be registered with the
processing subsystem (150). Thus, in one embodiment, the processing subsystem
(150) may also include a registration module (230) operatively coupled to the
communication module (220). The registration module (230) may be configured to
register the first user upon receiving a plurality of first user details via a first user
device (240). In one embodiment, the plurality of first user details may be stored in a
database (250) of the processing subsystem (150), wherein the database (250) may be
a local database or a cloud database. Moreover, in one exemplary embodiment, the
plurality of first user details may include a first username, contact details of the first
user, contact details of the second user, and the like. Also, in one embodiment, the first
user device (240) may include a mobile phone, a tablet, a laptop, or the like.
[0030] Later, upon establishing the communication link with the communication
unit (140), the processing subsystem (150) may have to receive at least one of certain
inputs from the first user, and information communicated by the communication unit
(140). Thus, the processing subsystem (150) may also include an input module (260)
operatively coupled to the communication module (220). The input module (260) may
be configured to receive one or more inputs from the first user upon establishing the
corresponding communication link. The one or more inputs may correspond to health-
related information of the first user. In one exemplary embodiment, the one or more
inputs may include at least one of one or more food habits of the first user, diseases
history of the first user, one or more previously received medical prescriptions,
duration of a particular disease which the first user might have suffered earlier, and
the like. The input module (260) may also be configured to receive at least one of the
one or more first parameters and the one or more second parameters from the
communication unit (140) upon receiving the one or more inputs.
14
[0031] Upon receiving the one or more inputs and the information from the
communication unit (140), the body fluid analysis may have to be performed on the
one or more first parameters. Thus, the processing subsystem (150) may also include
a fluid analysis module (270) operatively coupled to the input module (260). The fluid
analysis module (270) may be configured to perform the body fluid analysis on the
one or more first parameters associated with the second fluid of the one or more body
fluids (180) based on predefined fluid-related criteria. The fluid analysis module (270)
may also be configured to discern the one or more health issues corresponding to the
first user in real-time based on at least one of a result of the body fluid analysis, a
health-related history associated with the first user, the one or more inputs, the one or
more second parameters, and standard health issues-related information. In one
embodiment, the body fluid analysis may correspond to comparing the one or more
first parameters with a corresponding one or more threshold values. For example, in
the case of the apocrine sweat, the pH of the second predefined fluid (200) being the
soapy solution would be about 12. When, the sweat gets dissolved in the corresponding
soapy solution, due to the presence of the apocrine sweat whose pH is about 6 to about
7.5, the pH of the soapy solution having the apocrine sweat dissolved in it, increases.
Thus, the increase in the pH corresponds to the first user experiencing the one or more
health issues such as stress or anxiety. In such a case, the predefined fluid-related
criteria may include the increase in the pH value of the second predefined fluid (200)
upon dissolving the sweat in it. Therefore, in one embodiment, the result of the body
fluid analysis may correspond to the one or more first parameters being equal to or
greater than the corresponding one or more threshold values, or the one or more first
parameters being less than the corresponding one or more threshold values.
[0032] Suppose the health-related history associated with the first user may be
having a history of the first user experiencing cardiac arrest, heart attack, any other

third patch layer (120) may act as a storage unit for storing the first fluid of the one or
15
more body fluids (180), and the second fluid of the one or more body fluids (180)
respectively. In case of the first fluid of the one or more body fluids (180) being the
eccrine sweat, and the second fluid of the one or more body fluids (180) being the
apocrine sweat, the first patch layer (70) and the second patch layer (100) may be taken
to a laboratory for performing one or more tests to detect one or more health issues
such as, but not limited to, to detect a build-up of mucus in lungs, to detect a build-up
of mucus in one or more other vital organs, to detect cystic fibrosis, or the like. Also,
in one exemplary embodiment, the plurality of patch layers (60) may be routinely
disposable. Also, there is a possibility that the plurality of patch layers (60) could
overflow with the continuous reception of the one or more body fluids (180). Thus, in
an embodiment, the MEMS density sensor may be used to detect the overflow.
[0033] Later, upon discerning the one or more health issues of the first user, the
first user may have to take certain preventive measures to calm down for a certain time
to prevent making the current health condition of the first user more severe. Thus, in
one embodiment, the processing subsystem (150) may also include a health
improvement suggestion module (280) operatively coupled to the fluid analysis
module (270). The health improvement suggestion module (280) may be configured
to generate one or more suggestions corresponding to an improvement in the current

16
include an alert generation module (300) operatively coupled to the health
improvement suggestion module (280). The alert generation module (300) may be
configured to generate an alert to the second user based on the one or more health
issues discerned by the fluid analysis module (270), upon generating the one or more
suggestions by the health improvement suggestion module (280). The alert
corresponds to information regarding the current health condition corresponding to the
first user. In one exemplary embodiment, the alert may be generated in one or more
forms such as, but not limited to, a text message, an email, an audio alert, or the like.
[0036] The plurality of patch layers (60) also includes the second patch layer (100)
positioned adjacent to the first patch layer (70). The second patch layer (100) is
adapted to dissolve the one or more body fluids (180) into the first predefined fluid
(170) stored in the second patch layer (100). The second patch layer (100) is also
adapted to pass the first fluid of the one or more body fluids (180) forward via the
second semipermeable membrane (190), and retain the second fluid of the one or more
body fluids (180) based on a density of the one or more body fluids (180) when the
one or more body fluids (180) are pressurized by a continuous reception of the one or
17
more body fluids (180) via the unidirectional valve (310). The second fluid is denser
than the first fluid. The second fluid corresponds to a health issue discerning fluid. In
the case of the one o more body fluids (180) corresponding to the sweat, the first fluid
of the one or more body fluids (180) being the eccrine sweat, and the second fluid of
the one or more body fluids (180) being the apocrine sweat. In such a case, the apocrine
sweat may be retained in the second patch layer (100) and the eccrine sweat may be
passed forward, as the density of the apocrine sweat may be larger than the density of
the eccrine sweat. The second patch layer (100) includes the one or more first sensors
(130) adapted to measure the one or more first parameters associated with the second
fluid of the one or more body fluids (180) upon passing the first fluid of the one or
more body fluids (180) forward. Further, the plurality of patch layers (60) also includes
