Civilization in Britain
The Romans
• They 55 – 54 BC Julius Caesar spoke
about the Britons as a civilized society.
• In 43 BC Claudius sent legions to
Britannia.
• They conquered the Celts in the 1st
century AD.
• They remained in the British Isles for 4
centuries.
Roman Britain
• Britannia was ruled by a governor and
Celtic chiefs were used to keep order.

• The Romans conquered the Celts in


England and Wales.

• They failed to conquer the Celts in


Scotland (Picts).
• The Roman influence was very great in
engineering, law, politics, arts and lifestyle.

• The wealthy people accepted the Latin


language and the Roman way of life,
although Celtic languages continued to be
spoken.
• TOWN – the main characteristic of Roman
Britain.
• In 300 AD, there were 20 large towns and
100 small towns, all surrounded by thick
walls.
• The towns were connected by roads.
• Castrum – pl. Castra (fortified military
camp).
– Forum;
– Townhall;
– Shops;
– Public baths;
– Theatres;
– Streets.
• In towns they had all the modern facilites.

– Painted walls;
– Mosaic floors;
– Central heating;
– Glass windows;
– Baths.

• Villa - any form of rural agricultural
dwelling built in a Roman style. (farm)

• Villas belonged to the rich Britons who had


adopted the Roman lifestyle.
• Roman heritage in Britain:

– Network of roads;
– Sites of several towns;
– Toponyms;
• Christianity, which was well established in
Celtic Britain by the 4th century.

• From the 5th to the 8th c. Celtic Christianity


survived under the form of monasticism
(monasteries).
