Drafting skills assessment

A Draftsman draws plans for buildings and machines. They work in different fields and
collaborate with architects, engineers, and scientists. Basically, drafters interview consists of
two parts. Which are,
A) Part 1 - Communication skills & understanding – By taking oral interview.
B) Part 2 - Command on the software – By giving hands-on on the drafting software.

Part 1 - Communication skills & understanding – By taking oral interview.

Take prior interview before assigning tasks on the drafting software. It may not require
candidate to have through technical knowledge but should be aware with the basic drafting
standards. When interviewing Draftsmen, the best candidates will display active listening
skills and be able to follow instructions. Be wary of candidates who lack focus and
interpersonal skills.
Actions: -
a. Asking about candidate’s experience.
b. Asking questions about Basic commands of the related software.
c. Asking about latest versions of the software & newly accommodated changes.
d. Asking about their hobbies & interests.

Parameters to be observed: -
a. Communication skills
b. Applicability of candidates experience to the present requirement.
c. Knowledge about the software.
d. Listening skills & grasping power

Part 2 - Command on the software – By giving hands-on on the drafting software.

After oral interview assign candidate a drafting task. Please make sure that assigned task
should not be too much complex & should get complete within 0.75 to 1 hour duration.
Most of the candidates are familiar with the building drawings so we can always give them a
building plan/ bungalow plan to draft. Also ask them to develop a section along with marked
section line. Drafting skills of the drafter will be get tested here.
Actions: -
e. Provide candidate a 2 BHK plan (Mostly with staircase) / Bungalow plan. (Up to 800
SQFT built-up area).

f. Demarcate section line passing through toilet & staircase & ask candidate to develop
sectional view along the line.
g. Give him/her time limit to complete the task. (About 45 min to 1 hour).

Parameters to be observed: -
e. Time management of the candidate. (Whether candidate completed the task in
bound timeline or not).
f. Observation of how smartly candidate drew the drawing. (Checking whether
candidate worked in the layers or not).
g. Drafting standards (Checking dimensions, standard hatching of the material etc).
h. Checking of necessary details have been furnished or not (Like sunk slab details in
toilet, staircase cross-sectional details etc.).
