Some similarities of the Ancient Greek Government and the modern United States government

are they both have Democracies. The Ancient Greek government had a direct democracy
meaning members of council were chosen by manner of random selection. The U.S.
government uses presidential nominations and other methods to fill government positions, such
as senators or a president. Ancient Greek and the U.S. both have city states, also known as a
Polis. Another similarity of the two governments are they both follow a written constitution. I can
reference when Pericles said “The freedom which we enjoy in our government extends also to
our ordinary life”. My opinion of the similarities and differences of these two government
dynamics is Ancient Greek people were ahead of their time with having a democracy, where
citizens would be allowed to have a say so and it was a great guide to the making of the United
States government. Pericles “Our constitution does not copy the laws of neighbouring states;
we are rather a pattern to others than imitators ourselves”. - Pericles (Book 2.34-46) Thucydides
(c.460/455-c.399 BCE) Some differences of these two governments are in the Ancient Greek
times women, racial minorities and immigrants were not viewed as citizens in Greece, and had
very little influence on the political process. Whereas in modern day United States any citizen
over the age of 18 can vote, man or woman. Pericles once said “But all this ease in our private
relations does not make us lawless as citizens”. To summarize what i have learned about the
similarities and differences between the Ancient Greek government and the U.S. government is
the U.S. follows a lot of Ancient Greek rules while changing some of the rules. There are not
many differences besides a Representative Democracy and a Direct Democracy.
