Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to introduce myself for the PhD project at IMPRS-TRUST. I am
graduating with a Bachelors of Advanced Computing (R&D) (Hons) from the Australian National
University, Australia. I have a keen interest in theoretical fields and plan to pursue a career
in academia. So having the opportunity to do a PhD under guidance of an expert supervisor
through IMPRS-TRUST would be extremely useful for me. Additionally, the reading groups
and Doctoral Privatissima offered by this program are new experiences that I have not had
which would broaden my perspective for the long run. Moreover in my Bachelors, I focused on
studying logic deeply. I plan on complementing my existing knowledge through the preparation
phase of this program.
I want to obtain my PhD under supervision of Dr. Christoph Weidenbach from the Max
Planck Institute of Informatics in a project for Formalization/Theorem Proving.
For my Honors year, I worked with Professor Rajeev Gore on formalizing proof search
for BiIntuitionistic logic in Coq. During this, I enjoyed figuring out why the theoretical proofs
were not working in Coq, specifying proofs in further detail and implementing my own data
structures to make the code simpler. Formally verifying properties for a system allows me to
grasp the inner workings of it and understand what is going on under the hood. So, a PhD
under Dr. Christoph would provide me with an excellent opportunity to understand the theory
behind the systems we currently have.
I think I am an extremely strong candidate for a PhD due to my previous exposure to
research. As part of the R&D component of my degree, I have had to do three research projects
in the fields of Blockchain & Cyber Security, Machine Learning and Proof Theory. This has
given me exposure to performing research under supervision. In my Honors year, I have been
introduced to basics in Proof Theory and Proof Search. Through my PhD I hope to build upon
my current understanding. I also have a specialization in Theoretical Computer Science which
has consolidated my mathematical thinking and leads me to believe that I will be an asset for
the research group I am a part of.

Sincerely,

Chaahat Jain
