History
N1950Y started life its life at the Piper Lock Haven factory on 17 May 1950 as a PA18-105,
designated for export to South Africa as part of a batch of Super Cubs Piper exported direct
to Piper’s largest dealership in the world, outside of the USA. From early photographs the
plane seem to have been used in some agricultural operations and later on it was used in
Zimbabwe by a hunting outfitter. After it got reimported into South Africa, it was used by a
flying club in the norther part of the country until the early 90’s, when it fell into private
hands and had about 3 or 4 owners since then. It stood grounded since about 2014 with a
timex engine (no on-condition flying allowed in South Africa for timex engines, even in
private operations) until current owners bought it in 2020, with a view of fitting a new
engine and flying it. Closer inspection revealed that the plane was starting to show its years,
so it was decided to do a complete tear down and rebuild.

Plane was completely stripped and frame was checked in a PA-18 jig for trueness. Small
deviations were corrected and some corrosion on the lower tail, where the flying wires
attach to the fuselage was cut out and new parts welded in. Fuselage was also X-rayed and
inspected and any small issues were addressed. STC’s that required welding or removal of
fabric, were done at this time. After this, frame was sandblasted and again checked for any
imperfections that might be hidden by paint, but none were found. Frame was then primed
with strontium chromate primer and powder coated satin black. Rebuild commenced and at
each step, parts were cleaned, checked and replaced or refinished and re-used, depending
on condition / requirements. The STC list shows the various improvements that were made
and an upper baggage compartment was also installed, using previous field approvals of
same mod, as baseline. New Dakota cub fuel tanks were installed, fuel lines were replaced
and fuel selector replaced with a non-AD one from Dakota cub, that have L,R, Both options.
ELT was installed (programmed for USA) and coupled to a dedicated Garmin GPS, feeding
exact location information to the ELT, which will be transmitted in case of emergency.

After rebuild, aircraft was subject to in depth scrutiny by an FAA DAR, who flew out to South
Africa and spent 2 days going through plane, logbooks, paperwork, STC’s etc. with a fine
tooth comb. CofA was issued and comment from DAR was “I hope that the performance of
your aircraft is as good as it looks.”
