The BEKA-Shell – noise mitigation system for impulse piling
Big bubble curtain (BBC) systems are a

very effective method to reduce aquatic
noise transmission, because
water and air have very different

impedance behaviours
noise transmission changes significantly

depending on the air-water mixture
the bubbles have a resonance and therefore

diffuse and absorb sound. This is about a thousand
times more effective than their total air volume
would be!
the interaction of varying bubble sizes

further reduces noise transmission.

Science-based / Test results
Testing different noise mitigation systems. Tested was a rubber sleeve, a uncoated steel tube and
a coated steel pipe with bubble foil. This test was performed in the Baltic sea at 9 m water depth
using a free fall ram. The double-wall construction was tested in a laboratory setting using a
piezo sound emitter.

Within the ESRa (Evaluation of Systems

for Ramming Noise Mitigation) project
in August 2011 five different noise
mitigation systems were benchmarked.
Source of the left-hand diagram is the
technical final report (May 2012).
The test was executed at the

Brodtener Pfahl (pile). The final
report discribes the uncommon local
conditions (65 meters of the pile are
anchored in the seabed). The results
seem relatively poor, as the noise
is mostly transmitted through
deep bedrock.
