Assignment # 2 – Acids and Bases

Question 1. Acids, Bases and Buffers (15marks)

a) What mass of sodium ethanoate where 𝑀 = 𝐶𝐻 𝐶𝑂𝑂𝑁𝑎 = 82𝑔/𝑚𝑜𝑙) must be added

to 1.0L of 0.100 mol/L of ethanoic acid with a pka = 4.76 to construct a
buffer solution of;
i) pH = 4.97
ii) pH = 5.4
b) A buffer solution was made by mixing equal amounts (in moles) of CH 3NH2 and
+ -
CH3NH3 Cl in water. The pH was found to be 10.44.
+
i) Calculate the ka of CH3NH3
ii) What reaction occurs to resist a change in the pH if a drop of HCl is
added to the buffer?
iii) What reactions occur to resist a change in pH if a drop of NaOH is added
to the buffer?
iv) If a buffer solution is allowed to stand sometime in an open vessel, the
pH gradually falls. Suggest two possible explanation for this.

Question 2 Acid – Base Titrations (15marks)

a) Which of the following titrations would have an alkaline solutions at their

equivalence point? Why?
i) HCOOH/KOH
ii) NH3/ HCl
iii) NH3/HBr
iv) HCl/NaOH
v) HCl/KOH
vi) CH3COOH/NaOH

b) Draw the titration curve when adding 1ml portions of 0.100M NaOH to go 20ml of
0.100M CH3COOH (pka = 4.76). Note/ Calculate the following;
i) Initial pH
ii) Buffer zone pH range
iii) Mid-point of buffer zone pH
iv) Equivalence point pH (v) of final pH
