PS-III Assignment Questions
PS-III Assignment Questions
1. How the buses are classified in power system? Derive the expressions
of static power flow equations.
2. Explain the step-by-step computational procedure for the Gauss-
seidel method of load flow studies.
3. In the power system network shown in Fig. below, bus 1 is a slack bus
with Vi = 1.0 ∟0°p.u and bus 2 is a load bus with S2 = 280 MW + j60
MVAR. The line impedance on a base of 100 MVA is Z = 0.02 + J0.04
p.u. Using Gauss-Seidel method, determine V2• Use an initial estimate
of v∟0 = 1.0 + J0.0 and perform two iterations.
0 MW 200 MW
0 MVR 100 MVR
6. Determine the load flows at the end of first iteration by using fast
decoupled load flow method for the following data.
Bus 1 : Slack bus, Vspec = 1.04 00 p.u
Bus 2 : P V bus, Vspec = 1.0 p.u, PG2 = 2.5 p.u
Bus 3 : PQ bus, PD3 = 3.2 p.u, QD3 = 2.1 p u
7. Compare and contrast G-S, N-R and Fast Decoupled Load flow
methods.
UNIT-II
1. How the short circuit faults are classified? Explain them in detail.
2. Fig. shows four identical alternators in parallel. Each machine is rated for 25
MVA, 11 kV and has a sub transient reactance of 16 % on its rating.
Compute the short circuit MVA when a three-phase fault occurs at one of
the outgoing feeders.
3. Discuss the symmetrical component method to analyze an
unbalanced system.
4. Explain the sequence networks of three phase transformer.
5. A 25MVA,11KV 3-Ph generator has a sub transient reactance of 20%
the generator supplies two motors over a transmission line with
transformers at both ends as shown in the one-line diagram. The
motors have rated inputs of 15 and 7.5 MVA both 10kv with 25% sub
transient reactants the 3-ph transformers are both rated 30MVA,
10.8/121kv, delta-star with leakage reactance 10% each the series
reactance of the line is 100 ohms. Draw the positive and negative
sequence networks of the system with reactance measured in p-u.

6. Derive the expression for fault current and terminal voltage for a line to
ground fault at the terminals of an unloaded three-phase alternator.
Assume that the alternator neutral is solidly grounded.
