The right hand rule states that: to

determine the direction of the magnetic
force on a positive moving charge,
 point your right thumb in the direction
of the velocity (v),
 your index finger in the direction of
the magnetic field (B),
 and your middle finger will point in
the direction of the the resulting
magnetic force (FB).

Negative charges will be affected by a

force in the opposite direction.

3.75 x 104 m/s. Its motion is perpendicular to the magnetic field produced by a current-carrying wire,
which is 3.0 cm from it. (a) What is the magnitude of the magnetic field? (b) How much current flows
through the wire?

Calculate the magnetic field due to one or more straight wire conductors using the
superposition principle STEM_GP12EM-IIIi-62

Calculate the force per unit length on a current carrying wire due to the magnetic field
produced by other current-carrying wires STEM_GP12EM-IIIi-63

Figure 4: (a) The magnetic field produced by a long straight conductor is perpendicular to a parallel conductor, as indicated by right-hand rule.
(b) A view from above of the two wires shown in (a), with two magnetic field lines shown for wire 1. Right-hand rule shows that the force
between the parallel conductors is attractive when the currents are in the same direction. A similar analysis shows that the force is repulsive
between currents in opposite directions.

Additional Problem: Two long parallel wires 15 cm apart carry currents 8 A and 4 A. Find the force per
length of a wire of 8 A if they are parallel to one another.

I. Short-Response Essay. Answer the following items in 2 – 5 sentences. (10 points each)
Scoring: 7 pts – content; 3 pts – grammar and technicalities.

1. You have learned that electric force does work when it displaces a charged particle, while a magnetic
force with steady field does no work when a charge is displaced because the force is perpendicular to
the displacement. Explain this reasoning.

2. Based from your future profession, cite two (2) examples of the applications (i.e. instruments,
devices, inventions, apparatus, etc.) of magnetism concepts (e.g. magnetic fields, motion of charged
particle in a magnetic field, and magnetic field of a current-carrying wire). Then, explain elaborately
how these applications are used in your chosen field. Note: cite your profession first.
