IV. PROCEDURES:
For better understanding of the lesson , here is the list of words and their meanings. Read and
understand them carefully.
Cache
quick memory access area kept back on computer's primary memory or any storage device
Caching
process of storing data in a cache
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
known as the brain of the computer
Device Manager
control panel that allows a user to view the hardware information resources of a computer.
Expansion Slot
insertion slots in a motherboard for extended features
Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EPROM)
programmable read-only memory (PROM) chip that is capable of saving the data even when the power is off.
Flash Memory Storage Devices
retains data for an extended period of time, regardless of whether a flash-equipped device is powered on or
off.
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
interactive visual components of a specific application
Icon
small illustration that embodies a huge program
Interactive
two- way communication between the computer and the end user
Magnetic Storage Devices
magnetized medium type of storage devices
Multimedia
any file in a form of audio, video, text and other forms
Non- Volatile
stores data even if the power switches off
Online or Cloud Storage
cloud computing storage type where data is accessed from online servers
Optical Storage Devices
uses low-power laser beam to record and retrieve data
Overwritten
existing data has been written with a new information
Primary Storage Devices
capable of storing devices for a long period of time
Programmable Read-Only Memory (PROM)
a memory chip that can be programmed once after it is coded
Random-Access Memory (RAM)
known as the short-term memory
Read-Only Memory (ROM)
a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and other electronic devices
Secondary Storage Devices
stores data for a long period of time unless deleted
Sound Card
expansion card that sends audio input and output signals to and from a device
Video Card
expansion card that sends video input and output signals to and from a device
Volatile
requires power while storing the data
Pre - Test
TRUE OR FALSE
Directions: Read each sentence carefully. In a ¼ sheet of paper, write TRUE if the statement is correct
and FALSE if otherwise. DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING IN THIS MODULE.
1. Various information can be stored in internal or external storage devices for a short or a long period of time.
2. An 8GB thumb drive or flash drive is an example of an internal multimedia storage device.
3. Video cards are expansion cards for sending audio input and output signals to the computer.
5. Graphical User Interface (GUI) helps the user to navigate and send instructions to the computer by using mouse and
keyboard functions.
Learning Activities
Hit that Board!: The Rules of Darts
In the previous module, you have learned the parts and functions of a motherboard in the entirety of a
computer system. Moreover, you were able to familiarize yourself as to how the Complementary Metal Oxide
Semiconductor (CMOS) affects the performance and settings of your computer.
This time, you will begin another learning journey. Brace yourself and get ready to take another flight
to the succeeding concepts of computer systems.
Mechanics of the
Activity:
You are provided with three darts hitting three different colors of the board.
Each dart symbolizes one idea you know about Storage Devices. It could be any of the following:
Copy the dartboard illustration in your data notebook and write your
answers inside each targeted colored circle where the darts are pinned.
Please take note that your answers must be written in a complete thought.
Did you know that a user can store a variety of data and information on multimedia storage devices?
Oh wait, no idea about Multimedia Storage Devices? Haven’t encountered one yet? Well, that’s totally fine! Put
down all your worries! Because today, I will let you join Ms. Rodelas’ CSS class. Read how she explains
everything. Do not forget to have fun while in class!
As told by Miss Rodelas, you will be provided with more pictures and further explanations in the following pages of
this module. You can have your data notebook and take down notes for easy remembering. You can also search and
watch Youtube videos about Multimedia Storage Devices to enrich your learning experience. Perhaps you can explore
your gadgets or computers if these devices are available in your home. Do not just read, try to explore all possibilities!
Primary Storage Devices can store and retrieve data, as they are feed into it.
The memory of a computer is the most important component of Central
Processing Unit (CPU).
Examples:
RAM, ROM, Memory Cache
,
Secondary Storage is a storage that's separate from the computer itself,
where software and data can be stored on a permanent basis.
Secondary storage is necessary because memory, or primary storage, loses
its data when a computer is turned off whereas secondary storage does not.
(Masloff, J. (n.d.)
Below is a table showing examples of the different Secondary Storage Devices.
Examples:
Hard Drive, DVD, Memory Card, Cloud Storage, Network Media
Practice Task : Specifications Review: The
Storage Devices
Given below are pictures of different storage devices (USB Flash Drive/Thumb Drive, Hard Disk Drive and
a Rewritable Compact Disc Drive.
Take a look at each one and inspect its indicated specifications.
Identify the Manufacturer or Model, Storage Capacity and Description for each device.
Follow the given format below. Write your answers in your data notebook.
