COMMON LABORATORY EQUIPMENT IN DIGITAL

COMMUNICATION

1. CRO 30 MHz (Scientific) HM203 Oscilloscope

Oscilloscopes are used in the sciences, medicine, engineering, automotive and the
telecommunications industry. General-purpose instruments are used for maintenance of
electronic equipment and laboratory work. Special-purpose oscilloscopes may be used to
analyze an automotive ignition system or to display the waveform of the heartbeat as an
electrocardiogram, for instance.

2. Digital Multimeter

A digital multimeter is a test tool used to measure two or more electrical values—principally
voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms). It is a standard diagnostic tool for
technicians in the electrical/electronic industries.

Digital multimeters long ago replaced needle-based analog meters due to their ability to
measure with greater accuracy, reliability and increased impedance. Fluke introduced its
first digital multimeter in 1977.

3. Function Generator

A function generator is a specific form of signal generator that is able to generate

waveforms with common shapes. Unlike RF generators and some others that only create sine
waves, the function generator is able to create repetitive waveforms with a number of common
shapes.

In particular it can be made to become a sine wave generator, square wave generator, and
triangular wave generator.

4. DC power supplies

Laboratory power supplies are expected to function in constant-voltage and constant-

current mode to test components and circuit stages without developing a power regulation
circuit. A regulated DC power supply is a fundamental requirement of any laboratory.

5. MATLAB Software R

Signal Processing Toolbox™ provides functions and apps to manage, analyze,

preprocess, and extract features from uniformly and nonuniformly sampled signals. The
toolbox includes tools for filter design and analysis, resampling, smoothing, detrending,
and power spectrum estimation. You can use the Signal Analyzer app for visualizing and
processing signals simultaneously in time, frequency, and time-frequency domains. With
the Filter Designer app you can design and analyze FIR and IIR digital filters. Both apps
generate MATLAB® scripts to reproduce or automate your work.
