common English idioms. To make the meaning even clearer, and to show you how
the idiom can be used, each idiom is provided with a suitable sample sentence. In this
dictionary, the emphasis is on ‘true’ idioms. These are expressions whose meanings
cannot be easily worked out from the words they contain. The dictionary also provides
a great many variations in the way these idioms are used. The main emphasis , however
is on providing an understanding of the meaning of the idioms, rather than attempting to
be a complete guide to idiomatic usage.

This century is the age of Science. We cannot imagine our lives sans Science. Science
has become a part and parcel of our lives. Science has become a symbol of progress. The
PU
progress is in the field of medicine, education, industry etc. and we enjoy the comforts
of science in all fields. Science has developed effective transport and communication
system. Buses, cars, trains, planes have made transportation easy and comfortable, safe
and fast. Man has even landed on the moon with the help of technology. In the field of
T
medicine, science has worked wonders. Almost all kinds of diseases are entirely cured
AN
by modern drugs and medicines. Medicine has reduced pain and suffering. Electricity
is another important scientific invention. The comforts of our life like electric lamps,
refrigerators, fans, grinders, washing machines, etc are all run by electricity. Scientific
method of cultivation has solved the food problem. The pests destroying the crops are

that is the best known to us is the house - sparrow. But there is also the hedge - sparrow
that makes its nest in hedges and bushes. A noisy bird, the house - sparrow has its own
song, mainly made up of a series of the calls and twitters. It makes its nest in some hole
or some niche in the house. This nest is no more than an arrangement, not a very tidy
one of paper and straw, which may be lined with wool and hair. The hedge - sparrow is
more slender than the house - sparrow. It is in brown, black and bluish - green color. It
also sings, often a warbling song. Like the house - sparrows, it hops on the ground and
makes its own untidy nest. Sparrows eat seeds of many different kinds but much more
than seeds, they feed on insects. They lay about one to six eggs at a time.

Today the sense of responsibility and the devotion to work is disappearing slowly
among the younger generation. Students’ agitation has become a common scene now-
adays. So it has become essential to prepare the youth for their prosperous future and for
the stronger nation. With this view in mind, the centre has introduced the national service
scheme in schools and colleges. A coordinator has been appointed for the conduct of the
scheme. In every school and college a teacher is deputed in charge of it. Fifty students
from higher secondary classes are admitted into the scheme. In colleges students who
are willing to join the scheme are enrolled in it. The aim of the scheme is to inculcate
the qualities like leadership, cooperation, adjustability, discipline, team-spirit, a sense of

responsibility and service mindedness. The scheme includes traffic regulation, helping

The Chinese were the first to make gunpowder, invent the magnetic compass and gave

The Chinese also invented the art of making paper during the second century. Soon the

12. Write a summary or Make notes of the following passage.
Bombay is often regarded as India’s Capital of Hope. Bombay consists of seven islands,
IC
joined by land reclamation. Many Indians, especially those from the rural areas, regard
Bombay as their paradise, since they could find work relatively easily here, as compared
to their homelands. Being the pillar for revenue collection, Bombay’s economic growth
BL
has far outperformed the other cities. In fact, its per capita (head) production of goods and
services is about three times greater than that of Delhi - India’s second most prosperous
city. Unemployment is not a significant problem in Bombay, housing is. A visit in
PU
Dharavi, a slum area in Bombay will help clarify our imagination. The Bombayites’ so
called “houses” are actually movable shacks, built from unwanted bits of tarpaulin, tin
and cardboard. There are so many of them that a maze of alleys emerged, passable only
when I walked sideways like a crab between them. Curious about the living conditions, I
T
wondered around the maze, meeting groups of scantily clad kids and hungry, stray dogs.
Popping my inquisitive head into one of the small huts, I was totally amazed by their

living conditions. Estimating about twelve or more Bombayites living in each hut, these
two-storey houses are usually partitioned by rough platforms with ceilings no higher
than five feet from the ground. Furthermore, `these shacks look absolutely bare – no

The elephant is the largest and one of the most powerful and intelligent animals. Even
though blue whales are the largest animals for they grow up to 30 metres, elephants top

4 metres and a weight of 6 metric tons. The most remarkable feature of the elephant is
its tusks and trunk. The tusks, in fact, are two of its upper teeth that have grown on the
outside and become enlarged. A tame or trained elephant uses its tusks to support heavy
loads while wild elephants use them as weapons of attack. Tusks are made of ivory
which is highly valuable. And it is for tusks that elephants are hunted down and killed.
Even though articles made of ivory are banned in most countries they are available in
the black market, and this leads to elephant poaching. The trunk is another interesting

Compared to a motorbike or car, the bicycle is a slow moving vehicle but its popularity has
been on the increase in recent years. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, the bicycle does
not require petrol or diesel as a car or motorbike does. In these days of fuel shortage this is
definite advantage; it draws power from the rider. The bicycle, moreover, is small, light and
convenient. There are no parking problems. Another reason for its popularity is that it takes
one, to one’s destination with more certainty than cars or large motorbikes which are often
held up in traffic jams. Then, there is the fact that the bicycle causes absolutely no pollution.
It produces no noise and no smoke. Finally, it is now known that riding a bicycle is good
exercise which tones up one’s muscles. No wonder, more and more people prefer a bicycle to

disappointed, but he agreed. Because he needed to earn money, Galileo began experimenting with
different things, trying to come up with some sort of invention that he could sell for money. He
had a little bit of success with his invention that was like a compass that could be used to measure
plots of land. He had already experimented with pendulums, thermometers, and magnets. When he
heard that a Dutch inventor had invented something called a spyglass, but was keeping it a secret,
Galileo decided to work on one of his own. Within 24 hours, he had invented a telescope that
could magnify things to make them appear ten times larger than real life. One night, he pointed his
telescope toward the sky, and made his first of many space observations: the moon was not smooth,
like everyone thought. The moon was covered in bumps and craters. As technology has improved,
first Galileo, and then many others, have made improvements on the telescope, the wonderful
device that allows us to see from a distance.

During the holidays, many people hang mistletoes over doorways. People share kisses under
this evergreen plant, which is a popular Christmas tradition. However, one should never let
the image of a romantic plant used during the happy times of the holidays fool. In the forests
where they’re from, mistletoes can do some real damage. Let’s see the different ways in which
LI
they do harm others. The mistletoe plant is evergreen. This means it has leaves that remain
green throughout the year. It is poisonous and has white berries and small, yellow flowers. The
IL
mistletoe lives on other plants, taking water and nutrients from these plants. For this reason,
mistletoes are considered parasites. The white berries of the mistletoes contain seeds. Some
BR
birds and mammals like to feed on these berries. When they do, the seeds may attach to the
animal eating the berries. The animal may carry the seeds to another part of the tree or shrub.
They may also carry the seeds to another plant altogether. The seeds start to grow roots that dig
through the bark of the tree or shrub. The roots grow into the tissues of the plant they’ve taken
over. That’s how mistletoes take nutrients and water away from the host plants. Mistletoe can
be hard to remove once it infects a plant. The best way to fight off a mistletoe infestation is to
cut off the infected branch completely. If the mistletoe takes over more parts of the plant, it can
start to weaken the plant and make it harder for it to grow. As mistletoes grow in the trees, they
become a thick mix of branches and stems. This big mass is sometimes called a “witch’s broom.”
Some animals nest in these witches’ brooms. These animals include chickadees, house wrens,
and most Cooper’s hawks.
Questions:
a) What is a popular Christmas tradition?
b) Why is mistletoes considered a parasite?
c) What is the best way to ward off the mistletoe infestation?
d) What is called a ‘witch’s broom’?
e) Which animals nest in the witches’ brooms?
