Science GRADE – III

Dear Children,
Science is the study of the world around us, through observations, asking questions,doing
experiments, exploring, recording our findings, listening to others’ ideas, and sharing our own.
So, here we have an interesting activity for you, where all our little Junior scientists, shall
investigate and report their findings through a Science journal. The details for the activity
are as follows-

Learning Objectives: To enable learners to-
• Test how plants breathe.
• Examine the transport of water and minerals in plants through its stem.
Expected Learning Outcomes: Learners will now be able to-
• Identify that leaves help the plant to exchange air.
• Prove transportation of material within plants through the stem.
Experiment 1
Aim: Test how plants breathe.

Material Required: Fresh leaf, water, pebble and

transparent container.
Observation time: 1 day
Procedure:

Make sure that all the steps are carried out by your children. You can keep an eye on them for protection.

1. Take a glass bowl and fill it with water.

2. Pluck a large leaf from a plant or a tree. Do not take the leaf from the ground.
3. Place this leaf in the glass bowl and put a small pebble on it. This way the leaf will completely stay inside
the water.
4. Place this bowl outside your house under sunlight.
5. Note your observations in the table provided below
Experiment 2
Aim: Examine the transport of water and minerals in plants through its stem.

Material Required: Transparent glass coloured water, and a tender twig of plant with white flowers
(preferably)
Observation time: 1 day
Procedure:
1) Take some water in a glass.
2) Add a few drops of red ink to the water.
3) Cut the stem of a herb plant from its base.
4) Put it in the glass.

5) Note your observations in the table provided below

**Record your observations for both the experiments in a folder along with the pictures
taken by you, while carrying out the investigation.
