2022 DP1 SL Mid Term P1 [30 marks]

1a. [2 marks]
As part of a health program Theo tries to increase the number of steps he takes each day
by 500 steps. On the first day, he walks 1000 steps. Assume that he sticks to this plan.
How long will it take him to get to 10 000 steps in a day?

Markscheme
1000 + (n − 1)500 = 10000 A1
n = 19 A1

1b. [2 marks]
How long will it take him to complete a total of 540 000 steps?

Markscheme
(2(1000) + (n − 1)500) = 540000 A1

n = 45 A1
2. [5 marks]
Consider an arithmetic sequence where 𝑢 = 𝑆 = 8. Find the value of the first term, 𝑢 ,
and the value of the common difference, 𝑑.

Markscheme
METHOD 1 (finding 𝐮 first, from 𝐒 )
4(𝑢 + 8) = 8 (A1)
𝑢 = −6 A1
𝑢 + 7𝑑 = 8 OR 4(2𝑢 + 7𝑑) = 8 (may be seen with their value of 𝑢 ) (A1)
attempt to substitute their 𝑢 (M1)
𝑑=2 A1
METHOD 2 (solving simultaneously)
𝑢 + 7𝑑 = 8 (A1)
4(𝑢 + 8) = 8 OR 4(2𝑢 + 7𝑑) = 8 OR 𝑢 = −3𝑑 (A1)
attempt to solve linear or simultaneous equations (M1)
𝑢 = −6, 𝑑 = 2 A1A1
[5 marks]

3. [3 marks]
The first three terms of a geometric sequence are ln𝑥 , ln𝑥 , ln𝑥 , for 𝑥 > 0.
Find the common ratio.

Markscheme
* This question is from an exam for a previous syllabus, and may contain minor
differences in marking or structure.
correct use log𝑥 = 𝑛log𝑥 A1
eg     16ln𝑥
valid approach to find 𝑟 (M1)

eg      , , , ln𝑥 = ln𝑥 ×𝑟

𝑟= A1 N2

[3 marks]
4. [4 marks]
Consider two consecutive positive integers, 𝑛 and 𝑛 + 1.
Show that the difference of their squares is equal to the sum of the two integers.

Markscheme
attempt to subtract squares of integers (M1)
(𝑛 + 1) − 𝑛

EITHER
correct order of subtraction and correct expansion of (𝑛 + 1) , seen anywhere
A1A1
= 𝑛 + 2𝑛 + 1 − 𝑛 (= 2𝑛 + 1)

OR
correct order of subtraction and correct factorization of difference of squares A1A1
= (𝑛 + 1 − 𝑛)(𝑛 + 1 + 𝑛)(= 2𝑛 + 1)

THEN
= 𝑛 + 𝑛 + 1 = RHS A1

Note: Do not award final A1 unless all previous working is correct.

which is the sum of 𝑛 and 𝑛 + 1 AG

Note: If expansion and order of subtraction are correct, award full marks for candidates
who find the sum of the integers as 2𝑛 + 1 and then show that the difference of the
squares (subtracted in the correct order) is 2𝑛 + 1.

5. [4 marks]

Solve 8x = 2  42x .

Markscheme
(23)x = 21  (22)2x M1
23x = 21+4x M1
3x = 1+4x M1
x = –1 A1
6. [5 marks]
Solve the equation 2 ln 𝑥 =  ln 9 + 4. Give your answer in the form 𝑥 = 𝑝𝑒 where 𝑝,  𝑞 ∈
ℤ .

Markscheme
* This sample question was produced by experienced DP mathematics senior examiners
to aid teachers in preparing for external assessment in the new MAA course. There may
be minor differences in formatting compared to formal exam papers.

METHOD 1
2 ln 𝑥 −  ln 9 = 4
uses 𝑚 ln 𝑥 =  ln 𝑥 (M1)
ln 𝑥 −  ln 9 = 4
uses ln 𝑎 −  ln 𝑏 = ln  (M1)
𝑥
ln  =4
9
=𝑒 A1

𝑥 = 9𝑒 ⇒ 𝑥 = √9𝑒 (𝑥 > 0) A1
𝑥 = 3𝑒 (𝑝 = 3, 𝑞 = 2) A1

METHOD 2
expresses 4 as 4 ln 𝑒 and uses ln 𝑥 = 𝑚 ln 𝑥 (M1)
2 ln 𝑥 = 2 ln 3 + 4 ln 𝑒 (ln 𝑥 = ln 3 + 2 ln 𝑒) A1
uses 2 ln 𝑒 = ln 𝑒 and ln 𝑎 + ln 𝑏 = ln 𝑎𝑏 (M1)
ln 𝑥 = ln (3𝑒 ) A1
𝑥 = 3𝑒 (𝑝 = 3, 𝑞 = 2) A1

METHOD 3
expresses 4 as 4 ln 𝑒 and uses 𝑚 ln 𝑥 = ln 𝑥 (M1)
ln 𝑥 = ln 3 + ln 𝑒 A1
uses ln 𝑎 + ln 𝑏 = ln 𝑎𝑏 (M1)
ln 𝑥 = ln (3  𝑒 )
𝑥 = 3  𝑒 ⇒ 𝑥 = √3  𝑒 (𝑥 > 0) A1
so 𝑥 = 3𝑒 (𝑥 > 0) (𝑝 = 3, 𝑞 = 2) A1

Markscheme
EITHER
attempt to use the binomial expansion of (𝑥 + 𝑘) (M1)
C07x7k0+C17x6k1+C27x5k2+… (or C07k7x0+C17k5x1+C27k5x2+…)
identifying the correct term C27x5k2 (or C57k2x5) (A1)

OR
attempt to use the general term Cr7xrk7-r (or Cr7krx7-r) (M1)
𝑟 = 2 (or 𝑟 = 5) (A1)

THEN
C27=21 (or C57=21 (seen anywhere) (A1)
21𝑥 𝑘 = 63𝑥 (21𝑘 = 63 , 𝑘 = 3) A1

𝑘 = ±√3 A1

Note: If working shown, award M1A1A1A1A0 for 𝑘 = √3.
