Let Us Study

Health Appraisal and Screening Procedures

Health Appraisal refers to a series of procedures to assess or

determine the health status of the students through the use of teacher’s
observations, screening tests, health histories or medical records, medical
and dental inspections and psychological tests.

Screening tests includes blood pressure, height, weight, vision, and

hearing. A part of the school’s health appraisal program that seek to provide
for the students a comprehensive record on their health.

Dental examination this is done by the school dentist who will give
information on proper dental hygiene and importance of the teeth.

Medical examination this is the final step in heath appraisal with a

physical examination and evaluation made by a physician.

2
Vision Examination is a series of tests performed by an
ophthalmologist (medical doctor), assessing vision and ability to focus on
and discern objects, as well as other tests and examinations pertaining to
the eyes.

Height and weight are being monitored during puberty to know the
growth of a child and also to get to its BMI to describe the body’s condition.

For girls, (BSE) Breast Self-examination is recommended to check

your breasts for possible masses or lumps the moment you start
menstruating.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often

during the growth spurt just before puberty. It affects girls more often. This
condition can be corrected if treated early before the bones have fully
developed.

Screening Procedure for Scoliosis

Forward Bend Test:

1. Stand facing away from the screener.
2. Bend forward at the waist 90 degrees, feet 10cm apart, knees straight,
and feet parallel to each other.
3. Palms of the hands are facing each other and arms hang down, and
are relaxed. The head is down.

It is normal if the screener observes the following:

• Both sides of upper and lower back are symmetrical.
• Hips level and symmetrical.

There is possible scoliosis if the screener observes the following:

• One side of rib cage and/or the lower back showing uneven symmetry.
• Curve in the alignment of the spine.

Let Us Reflect

When you were a child, your family, especially your parents, and other
concerned adults make sure you had your regular medical checkups,
immunizations, and other health care procedures.

Now that you already reach adolescent stage, your personal health
becomes your responsibility. One way to do this is to know your health
status and take necessary actions to improve your health practices and
habits. Early detection of medical problems can help you prevent from
having more serious damages that would need immediate and expensive
treatment.

In order to monitor your health status, regular health checkups and

screening tests can be done appropriately for you. For school age children
and adolescents, the health personnel such as the school physician, school
nurse, school dentist, as well as teachers and other school personnel
perform checkups and screening tests at the beginning up to the end of the
school year. This is part of the school health services provided to the
students.

Congratulations! You have accomplished this module and you did a

great job! I hope you enjoy answering this module and continue this
enthusiasm with the following modules. See you! God Bless
