1 year prior to his return to the castle, Arthur was given a riddle by the evil night which

he vowed to solve.
While returning ,he met an elderly looking lady at her hut and was told the answer to
the riddle. When the knight heard it, he was stunned. Arthur was also told by the woman
that the knight’s life would carry on if he beheaded him and that the only way for the evil
knight to die is if the crystal ball inside of his locket was destroyed.

Arthur, knowing the knight’s weakness, asked for his locket. Upon hearing this the
knight became pale to the words of the King. Arthur then fiercely grabbed the knight's
locket , unlocked it , then grabbed the crystal ball and threw it on the ground so hard
that the sound violently echoed through the chamber. With that, the conjuring-knight
died with an agonized cry.

After this ordeal, he returned to the elderly lady's house, to fulfill the promise he made to
her. She could now marry any of the knights she chose. They traveled for a long time,
and arrived at Carleon at midday. Everyone in the court was surprised to see the king
with an elderly lady, and many of them thought the king had married the lady. To avoid
any confusion, Arthur told them the previous events and the promise he made to the
lady. Upon hearing this, all the knights agreed to marry the lady if she chose them.

Upon hearing the knights’ agreement, the lady immediately chose Sir Gawaine as her
husband, as she had secretly fallen in love with him.
Sir Gawaine accepted her as his wife, and after eleven days, he married her in the
royal chapel. Everyone felt sorrow for Sir Gawaine as the lady, who was considered
ugly by many, chose him.
After their marriage, the woman tested Gawaine. After staying loyal, and after he proved
to be a worthy knight, she revealed to him that she was in fact the Lady of the Lake and
that she had secretly fallen in love with him when she first saw him, when he was saying
adieu to Sir Pellias. After hearing this, Sir Gawaine was elated.

When the rest of the court heard the news, they felt happiness for Sir Gawaine and felt
optimistic for the future.
