11 REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Bhavana Kasbekar, Aalekh, 2000, has given a study of Indira Gandhi Nahar project in her research work named Development Administration and Organisational Effectiveness. Its study gives an idea of structure of IGNP and the functions performed by its various structure. In this study an attempt has been made to analyze the problem faced during implementation of IGNP at various levels, which have caused an extensive delay in its completion. An elaborate description of these problems along with suggestion to overcome them has also been presented in the present research work.

Daniel Klingensmith, Oxford University Press, 2007, has written a book named One Valley And A Thousand, Dams, Nationalism and Development. The book shows enormous global investments in dams. Dams were essentially political symbol of progress and national impowerment and achievement. This project also shows how Damodar Valley Project was influenced by American River Control Projects. He demonstrates how development policies and actions the construction of dams, power stations and irrigation canals were and are linked to ideological challenges posed by nationalism, liberal colonialism and post war liberal modernism.

B.B.S Kapoor, Ahmed Ali, S.K Mathur and Satish Kaushik Madhu Publications 2002, in their book Advances in Resource Management of the Indian Desert has emphasized on improvement in quality of life of people through proper environmental

management. The volume suggests strategies for efficiency and accountability in rational use of resource in the desert ecosystem.

Mr. R.Rangachari in his book Bhakra Nangal Project-Socio Economic and Environmental Impacts has done an in depth study of the most well known multipurpose river valley projects in north India the Bhakra Nangal Project. One of the first scientific performance analyses of a competed project in India .It examines how the stated objective of projects has been fulfilled. The volume studies the incidental and indirect consequences of dam including its synergetic impact and Green Revolution, increased food production and productivity in the area and displacement and rehabilitation of people from the areas submerged when the dam was built.

Mr. Rakesh Hooja in his book Greening the Desert: Motivating Settlers in the IGNP. New Delhi, Rawat, 2001, 296 p., ISBN 817033-689-9, reviews in an interdisciplinary manner internationally available literature on settlement theory and management of irrigation and Command Area Development projects. It then undertakes an indepth analysis of the Indira Gandhi Canal (formerly Rajasthan Canal) Project which involves not only massive agro-irrigational works and efforts, but also infrastructural area development and the transformation of demographic conditions in its command area. Problems in implementing the project and especially in motivating people to settle and initiate irrigated agriculture have been identified. Lessons from settlement and irrigation management/rural development theory and also from field experiences in the project over the last 40 odd years are considered so as to identify course of action which would result in better settler motivation, optimal implementation of the Command Area Development Programme, and the eventual greening of large tracts of the Thar Desert. The book is

likely to interest engineers, social scientists, and experts in agriculture, afforestation, town planning, rural development, infrastructure development, social transformation, public and project administration, land and water management, etc."

Its quite clear from the above written facts of research works of various specialists that a detailed study have been done by them on various irrigation projects and environmental factors related to dam, water and desert areas. But none of them have thrown specific light on Indira Gandhi Nahar Project. Therefore the present theme of this dissertation has to be undergone and deemed important with the name Economic Impact Of IGNP In Bikaner District (a comparative study of stage I and II).
