1.1 SYSTEM PURPOSE

The HFC system ( m u l t i f u n c t i o n cornputer) performs number o f f u n c t i o n s


f o r v a r i o u s A/C systems.
The HFC i s used t o :
- decrease t h e number o f r e l a y s
- replace the specialized e l e c t r o n i c u n i t s
- s i m p l i f y t h e d e f i n i t i o n , i n s t a l h t i o n and m o d i f i c a t i o n s o f systems
concerned.

on shetf 91VU and MFCZ on s h e l f 92VU,
I n t e r f a c e w i t h A/C w i r i n g i s ensured by a type ARINC 600 connector
l o c a t e d a t t h e back o f each RFC.

FAULT/OFF legends :
Four Lighted pushbuttons are i n s t a l l e d on c e i L i n g panel 2SVU, Each
pushbutton i s dedicaded t o one modute. When a module f a i l u r e i s
detected b y i t s i n t e r n a l monitoring, e i t h e r on pouer-up o r d u r i n g t h e
f l i g h t , t h e corresponding FAULT i n d i c a t i o n comes on. On c e n t r a l warning
panel, MFC legend cornes on, MASTER CAUTION legends and SINGLE CHINE
sound are activated, Module outputs remain as they were when t h e
f a i l u r e occurred. I f t h i s l i g h t e d pushbutton i s pressed, b o t h supply
sources o f the f a u l t y module are turned off. OFF i n d i c a t i o n comes on
and FAULT i n d i c a t i o n goes o f f ,

1.3 SYSTEM LAYOUT

The system i s organizèd around two i d e n t i c a l cornputers made o f two


independent modules. Each module i s f i t t e d w i t h i t s oun supply card,
i t s oun microprocessors, i t s own input/output interface,
MFC No, 1 i s made o f M F C l A and MFClB modules,
MFC No. 2 i s made o f HFC2A and MFC2B modules,

Each module performs d i f f e r e n t functions, For coeputer


i n t e r c h a n g e a b i l i t y reasons, modules A and modules B a r e r e s p e c t i v e l y
f i t t e d w i t h t h e same software- A programming b y A/C w i r i n g which
d e f i n e s MFC on s i d e 1 and HFC on s i d e 2 allows each module t o o n l y use
i t s dedicated p a r t o f t h e software,

1 - 4 INTERCONNECTION AND LINK BETWEEN MODULES

The intermodule dialogue i s accompLished through an ARINC 429 bus, Each


module sends t h e s t a t u s o f a l L i t s analog and d i s c r e t e i n p u t s t o t h e
t h r e e remaining modules as w e l l as some data from i n t e r n a t logics, The
transmission p r o t o c o l i s d e f i n e d t o transmit a block o f data. Each
datum i s composed o f two bytes o f data and o f a l o c a t i o n address i n t h e
block. Each datum i s t r a n s m i t t e d t w i c e consecutively, once on a f i x e d
Label s p e c i f i c t o the t r a n s m i t t e r meant t o be trapped by r e c e i v e r
modules, and immediately a f t e r on a computed CabeL depending on t h e
t r a n s m i t t e d address, intended t o a p o s s i b l e ARINC reader, Therefore,
t h e bus i s s t r u c t u r e d i n two-ARfNC word frames, each c a r r y i n g the same
data, The frame transmission r a t e i s 2 ras,

Each modute i s atso f i t t e d w i t h a bus l i n k RS232C. Such L i n k i s used t o


access t h e h e a t t o f t h e MFC system i n order t o t e s t t h e u n i t functions.
The MFC maintenance f u n c t i o n c e n t r a l i z e d i n the 1 A module uses t h i s
l i n k - It w r i t e s c h r o n o l o g i c a l l y i n an EEPROM ( n o n - v o l a t i l e memory)
i n t e r n a l f a i L u r e s which are t h e r e s u l t o f seLf t e s t s o f each module,
and i t a l s o w r i t e s e x t e r n a l f a i l u r e s from l o g i c s concerning t h e
maintenance o f f u n c t i o n s s t o r e d i n the MFC.

1.5 MAINTENANCE FUNCTION

The system maintenance f u n c t i o n i s c e n t r a l i z e d i n module NFCIA. It


w r i t e s two types o f d a t a i n chronological order i n a non-voLatile
memory :
- i n t e r n a 1 f a i t u t e s , r e s u l t i n g from s e l f t e s t s r e l a t e d t o each module.
- e x t e r n a l f a i l u r e s , from l o g i c s r e l a t e d t o t h e maintenance o f
f u n c t i o n s s t o r e d i n the MFC-

As soon as a datum i s w r i t t e n i n t h e n o n - v o l a t i l e memory, t h e BITE LOAD


magnetic l i g h t i s activated. I n t h i s case, when performing a
maintenance operation, the r o t a r y s w i t c h s h a l l be s e t from NORMAL
FLlGHT p o s i t i o n t o one o f the p o s i t i o n s r e l a t e d t o a i r c r a f t systemç :
-WOU/LDG : a i r / g r o u n d systems, landing
gears
-BOOTS : pneumatic de-icing
-NAV : navigation
-FLT CTL : f l i g h t controls
-BRK : braking
-DOORS : doors
-fiISC 1, 2 or 3 : miscellaneous systems
-MFC : MFC

The f o u r legends located under the r o t a r y s u i t c h are o f f , I f P f A


pushbutton s w i t c h i s pressed, one o f t h e f o l l o u i n g c o n f i g u r a t i o n s i s
obtained :
- The four legends coae on : no f a i l u r e o f t h e selected system i s
memorized, Another system can then be setected,
- One Legend o r more come on : t h i s corresponds t o a f a i l u r e code, The
f o l l o w i n g memorized f a i l u r e i s dispLayed by pressing PTA pushbutton
s u i t c h - When a l L t h e f a i l u r e codes f o r a system are displayed, t h e
f o u r Legends come on,

When a w r i t i n g f a i l u r e i n maintenance memory i s detected, (MFC1A


f a i l u r e ) , t h e switching t o a system causes iLlurnination o f t h e four
Legends before pressing PTA pushbutton suitch.

I n order t o erase the maintenance memory, s e t r o t a r y switch t o ERS and


press PTA pushbutton switch f o r more than 5 seconds, The magnetic
i n d i c a t o r i s de-activated, As l o n g as erasing operation i s on,
hexadecimal code 9 i s displayed ( e x t e r n a l legends are on : F O O F L I f an
i n c i d e n t i s detected d u r i n g erasing operation, the f o u r legends come
on- When code O i s disptayed (legends o f f ) , maintenance memory i s
erased. Set r o t a r y switch t o NORMAL FLIGHT, As long as r o t a r y switch i s
n o t s e t back tu t h i s position, MAINT PANEL l i g h t located on CAP (Creu
A L e r t i n g Panel) i s on-
A f t e r an e r a s i n g operation, any f a i l u r e code u r i t t e n i n the maintenance
memory i s i n h i b i t e d f o r 5 minutes, MFClA i s r e s e t t o override t h i s time
deLay-

1.6 BITE DESCRIPTION

- 1 advanced externaL BITE -> 9 l a s t f L i g h t s taken i n t o account

The f a i l u r e codes a r e recorded i n an EEPROM memory (non-volatile


nenory) u i t h a 2 - k i l o b y t e capacity. Equipment i s composed o f 10 main
systems, each systea having 14 d i f f e r e n t f a i l u r e s , which r e s u t t s i n 140
p o s s i b l e f a i l u r e codes t o be recorded d u r i n g one f l i g h t ,

e x t e r n a l BITE when HFClA i s f a u l t y ,

Externat BITE :
I f a f a i l u r e appears, i t i s taken i n t o account and w r i t t e n a f t e r the
others i n EEPROM e x t e r n a l BITE, I f t h e f a i l u r e i s aLready written, i t
rneans t h a t such f a i l u r e has already appeared a t l e a s t once since the
l a t e s t CLEAR 81TE ; therefore, i t i s n o t r e - u r i t t e n ,
A f t e r several a i r c r a f t f l i g h t s , e x t e r n a l BITE w i l l represent a l 1
f a i l u r e s which occurred d u r i n g these f l i g h t s , On t h e contrary, i f a
f a i L u r e appears a t each f l i g h t , i t i s w r i t t e n i n t h e externat BITE area
o n l y once,
Use o f e x t e r n a l BITE i s p o s s i b l e by means o f a system selector, a Push
t o Advance b u t t o n and 4 legends- Each time t h e PTA pushbutton switch is
pressed, f a i l u r e code appears on t h e 4 l i g h t s . The order o f appearance
o f t h e codes corresponds t o t h e r e c o r d i n g order o f f a i l u r e s , i n t h e
EEPROM i n t e r n a l BITE area, i,e t h e code o f appearance o f f a i l u r e s
d u r i n g f l i g h t ( s 1 . I f t h e r e are no more recorded f a i l u r e s , code FFFF ( 4
legends on) i s displayed. I f pushbutton switch i s pressed again,
d i s p l a y s are c y c l e d again f o r t h e selected system. CLEAR BITE erases
a i r c r a f t e x t e r n a l BITE. The BITE LOAD t u r n s white as Long as a f a i t u r e
is recorded i n t h e e x t e r n a t BITE-
Advanced e x t e r n a t B I T E :
The advanced e x t e r n a l B I T E can r e c o r d f a i l u r e codes o f t h e 9 l a s t
f l i g h t s . I f 10 f l i g h t s are acconpLished, the advanced e x t e r n a l B I T E
operates a f l i g h t data replacement-

TMT s o f t u a r e (Transportable Memory Terminal)


A connection w i t h t h e MFC maintenance system i s p o s s i b l e u s i n g a
p o r t a b l e computer and a connection cable i n order t o copy data. TMT
s o f t u a r e has been developed t o enable maintenance personnel t o c l e a r l y
r e a d f a i l u r e codes recorded i n e x t e r n a l and advanced e x t e r n a l BITE
. a f t e r an a i r c r a f t f l i g h t . TMT software makes i t p o s s i b l e t o gather the
f a i l u r e codes o f t h e Last 9 f l i g h t s on a f l o p p y d i s k o r on paper i n
order t o analyze t h e p o s s i b l e f a i l u r e s ,

3 - 2 RESISTANCE MODULES

The f o u r r e s i s t a n c e modules a r e l o c a t e d i n racks 91VU and 92VU ; t h e y


ensure a minimum c u r r e n t i n microswitches, Damage t o r e s i s t a n c e modules
due t o t h e i r o v e r h e a t i n g caused by t h e d i s s i p a t e d power has been
evidenced on i n - s e r v i c e a i r c r a f t . Tests i n l a b o r a t o r y were c a r r i e d o u t
t o cause t h e same damage and check r e s i s t o r f i t t i n g o v e r h e a t i n g l e a d i n g
t o welding b e i n g damaged and t h e n t o i n s u f f i c i e n t mechanical s t r e n g t h
o f resistances.
Damage t o r e s i s t a n c e modules causes number o f f a i l u r e s , mainty
i n d i c a t i o n f a i l u r e s and d i s c o n t i n u e i l l u m i n a t i o n o f legends.
- i l l u m i n a t i o n o f FAULT legend o f emer b a t charge 45PA and main b a t
charge 35PA pushbutton switches on panel 29VU.
- d i s c o n t i n u e i l l u m i n a t i o n o f r e d UNLOCK legend and green arrows on
panels 25VU and 404VU.
- i l l u m i n a t i o n o f FAULT legend on BLEED and A I R COND systems,
A t e c h n o l o g i c a l improvement o f module P/N ASNEOS64-A01 has been d e f i n e d
and c o n s i s t s i n increased ohmic value and dimension o f resistances, a
g r e a t e r space between r e s i s t a n c e s and t h e use o f v e l d w i t h a h i g h
m e l t i n g p o i n t . New r e s i s t a n c e modules P/N ASNEOS64-BO1 a r e mechanicalty
and e l e c t r i c a l l y interchangeable ( r e f e r t o
Service B u l l e t i n ATR72-31-1004/Mod. No. 3202 a i r c r a f t ATR72 MSN 272 and
subsequent). A t e c h n i c a l f o l l o w up TFU31544 has been issued and sums up
problems due t o module damage.

3.3 UNLOCK LEGEND AND GREEN ARROW ILLUMINATION

A i r / g r o u n d l o g i c s o f most systems are c a r r i e d o u t u s i n g data from


p r o x i m i t y switches 50G0, 51G0, 52GB, 5368, 5468 and 5568 f o r WOU and
7GA, 8GA, 9GA, IOGA, 11GA and 12GA f o r DNLKD and UNLK,

illumination o f UNLOCK legends and green arrows e n t a i l s t h e random


i l l u m i n a t i o n o f UNLOCK p r i m a r y i n d i c a t i o n s and green arrows f o r t h e
t h r e e l a n d i n g gears. These i l l u m i n a t i o n s come w i t h h y d r a u l i c p r e s s u r e
surge i f they l a s t more than one second and i n d i c a t e M F C l o g i c
o p e r a t i o n t h a t responds t o changing d a t a on l a n d i n g gear p o s i t i o n . T h i s
type o f f a i l u r e Leads t o a ground connection check o f p r o x i m i t y
switches and t o a c l e a n i n g o f t e r m i n a l s .

3.4 CASES OF STICK PUSHER "FAULT" ILLUMINATION AND BITE ACTIVATION

The s t i c k pusher "FAULT" l i g h t comes on when MFC d e t e c t s an anomaly o f


alpha probes.

- t h e i n s t a l l a t i o n o f an ATR42 probe w i t h two p o t e n t i o m e t e r s on an
ATR72 u s i n g a probe w i t h f o u r p o t e n t i o m e t e r s
- a discrepancy from more than 4" between b o t h alpha probes-
- When a l t i t u d e i s under 5 0 0 f t and speed over 185kts.
BITE maintenance codes " C m and "D" i n "FLT CTL" system a r e a c t i v a t e d i f
t h e r e i s a discrepancy from more than 2" between two potentiometers o f
t h e same alpha probe d u r i n g 5 secondes,

3.5 TROUBLE SHOOTING PER SYSTEM

The below i n f o r m a t i o n w i l l enable t o p e r f o r m a t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g on a


system f u r t h e r t o t h e d i s p l a y o f a f a i l u r e code i n the MFC maintenance
memory.

4. RECOMMANDATIONS

4.1 MFC SWAPPING

MFC system i s made o f two i d e n t i c a l computers, each b e i n g f i t t e d w i t h


two independent modules, Each module i s f i t t e d w i t h t h e same s o f t w a r e
and a programming by A / C w i r i n g determines MFC on s i d e 1 and M F C on
s i d e 2 so t h a t each module o n l y uses i t s d e d i c a t e d software p a r t .
When a f a i l u r e occurs on a system, i t i s p o s s i b l e t o cross b o t h u n i t s .
Although b o t h MFC's a r e interchangeable, t h e y operate d i f f e r e n t l y
depending on t h e i r p o s i t i o n 1 o r 2. Indeed, most i n p u t and o u t p u t p i n s
change f u n c t i o n .

Example :

M f C l : a l t i t u d e a l e r t legned c o n t r o l on a l t i m e t e r
MFC2 : opening i n h i b i t i o n of t h e passenger cornpartment temperature
c o n t r o l valve.

I n t h i s case, a f a i l u r e can disappear on one s i d e when c r o s s i n g


computers and appear on another system on t h e o t h e r side. The p i n
a l l o c a t i o n t a b l e (see chapter 5) gives p i n f u n c t i o n s depending on
p o s i t i o n 1 o r 2.
I t i s advisable t o p l a c e a spare MFC i n suspected p o s i t i o n i n order t o
determine i f t h e r e i s a f a i l u r e .
