FOR EHV/HV POWER CABLES & GIS AFTER INSTALLATION

PARTIAL DISCHARGE MEASUREMENT

Purpose of the Test :The purpose of this test is to localized dielectric breakdown of a small portion of a solid or liquid Electrical Insulation system under high voltage stress. The Partial Discharges appear as fast pulses with duration of a few hundreds of nanoseconds. In the IEC-60270 standard, the Partial discharge pulse (PD Pulse) is defined as a current or voltage pulse that results from a partial discharge occurring within the object under test. Test Equipment:- Omicron MPD 600 Test Procedure:This test should be performed in case of Extra High Voltage Power Cables when all the Joints and Termination and GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgears or Gas Insulated Lines) have been completed. The PD Measurement Diagnostic Method is divided into two Categories. 1- Offline 2- Online Offline Diagnostic PD Measurement is performed when the Power Cables/GIS disconnected from the Grid Supply/ Feeding Supply. It is performed by energizing the Power Cables/GIS with High Voltage Supply. The Measuring Equipment is connected to Power Cables/GIS using the Coupling Capacitor or the PD pulses may be detected using HFCTs or Externally Coupled Capacitors. The Methods enables the PDs to be detected and localized in cables and GIS. On-line Diagnostic is performed on the Cables/GIS during Operation and the test instruments must comply with at three demands: 1) Resisting-disturbance of electromagnetic wave from the environment: 2) not affecting operation of Power Cables/GIS: 3) High voltage divider ratio if directly coupled. On-line partial discharge on the cables is detected using high frequency sensors. The sensors can be divided into two basic types Capacitive or inductive type. The capacitive sensors are usually made of conductive tape placed on the insulation

screen between the HV termination and the Screen wires. Another option is to place the capacitive sensor on the insulation screen in the cable joint, under the metallic screen. The inductive sensors usually used for on-line PD measurement are high frequency current transformer and Rogowski coils. They can be placed on the power cables after the earth connection, before the high voltage termination or on the power cables earth connection. On-Site Step by Step Procedure for PD Testing:Before measuring PD, the test set-up has to be calibrated. The calibration process has two main steps Voltage Calibration Charge Calibration The voltage calibration has to be performed only once for a test set-up (independently of the test object) The charge Calibration had to be performed for every test object by using the charge calibrator. But it should be remembered that SWITCH OFF the High Voltage before beginning the charge calibration. After calibration, disconnect the calibrator unit from the test object.
