EDFL 568 Curriculum Methods

Discussion Handout #2

Three (3) Important Practices

1. Interest and significance

Curriculum materials must gain the attention of students for it to be successful. Principals
must understand the importance of interest and significance of material to become
curriculum expert. The best process to incorporate is the interest of students by collecting
data from groups of students with different ideas about the curriculum. Once data is
collected and processed, principal can present it to the curriculum team to come up with
the best practice to accommodate the student’s interest. Make sure the information
provided in meaningful and significant to the learner.

2. Essential acquisition
Curriculum material must be evaluated regularly and updated according to the today’s
society. Understanding the importance of curriculum and the process to keep it revised is
what it will take for principal to be an expert in curriculum. Attending training and
workshop to increase knowledge that will benefit students is what principal/curriculum
team to become successful.

3. Integrative approaches
Curriculum can be used as a puzzle by connecting different material and making it a
complete picture. Using lesson plan that have many different components that cover a
variety of materials that are related is the integrative approach. Principal can have a team
of people that teach different subjects to come up with a curriculum plan that will
incorporate information from each that can be combine as one lesson. This can help
improve knowledge for both staff and students. Being creative and finding opportunities
to introduce new material that relates is an important practice that principal can
implement.
