    An image is a two-dimensional function where the amplitude at each point (x,y) represents the image's intensity or grey level at that location. An image exists in the spatial domain, or normal image space, and changes in the image directly correspond to changes in position in that space. A digital image is created by discretizing and quantizing an image into picture elements or pixels, represented as a discrete function f(i,j) defined at integer coordinates (i,j).

    coordinates (x,y) is called the
    intensity or grey level of the
    image at that point.
