others.

SUMMARY

The novel begins with a person (that person was called Robert Walton) narrating the
letters he wrote to his sister, when in one of those letters he narrates how he met
the person he could call a friend.

That friend was Victor Frankenstein, the main character of the novel. He was a child
like any other, he had grown up in a wealthy family, full of love and attention. When
he was little he dedicated himself to reading all the books he could, acquiring
knowledge that at his young age he tried to process. He had two siblings: William
and Elizabeth. She was actually his cousin. When Elizabeth's mother died, her father
expressed his wishes that Alphonse Frankenstein take care of her because he
wanted to marry again and follow his late wife's request. Caroline Beaufort
Frankenstein, Víctor's mother, loves Elizabeth as one more daughter and that makes
her her favorite.

His childhood was filled with joy, good memories and many discoveries since Víctor
liked to read. At the age of 17, his parents decide it was time to send him off to
college, but Elizabeth comes down with scarlet fever and his trip is delayed. Although
the disease did not kill her, it did kill Caroline because, knowing that her favorite
daughter was already showing improvements, she ignored the doctors' warnings and
visited her frequently. He caught it and eventually died from the disease.
Elizabeth took her mother's place, at Caroline's request, and always tried to cheer
them all up, putting her family's happiness before her own and a few months later
preparing to see Victor off as their journey had resumed. Saying goodbye to
everyone, including his good friend Henry Clerval (who couldn't convince his father
to go to Ingolstadt with him), Víctor goes to study at the University of Ingolstadt
where, after attending classes for a while, he discovers his great interest in “ The
secret of life". From this interest, his idea of giving life to something inert was born,
so to achieve this, he ventures into cemeteries for several to observe how these
corpses become the inheritance of worms.
After what seemed like months of work, stress and anxiety were taking over. His
family rarely knew anything about his state of health as Victor had become a hermit.
But one night he managed to complete his long work. He gave life to the inert
however, nothing went as planned since upon seeing his creation, fear flooded him
and he fled from his laboratory.

He arrived at an inn where luckily he met Henry and only for a moment forgot what
he had done. After a long talk, the moment came when Víctor "had" to talk about
what he had done, but anxiety made him die. He fell ill for a long time, but his best
friend stayed by his side until he got better and he decided to return home after the
terrible news of his father, his brother had died.

When she returned, she learned that Justine, her housemaid, had been sentenced
for William's death. During his escape to the forest, he met "the monster" there he
learned who had killed his brother. After a series of events, he spoke face to face
with "the monster" who told him his entire story during the two years he was
wandering. First, he tells her how he escaped from his laboratory and how it took
him time to get used to feeling, seeing, smelling, and touching so many things at the
same time. He describes his "contact" with humans as horrible.
He tells her about "his protectors" who were De Lacey, Felix, and Agatha. A family
of Frenchmen who had fallen into ruin and who had been banished from France.
With them, he learns concepts that he begins to use and understand. Seeing that
Félix works a lot but they are still poor (“the monster” was unaware of that term) he
decides to help them. I cut dry wood for them, and when it was Christmas time, I
helped them with the snow that accumulated. He spends very pleasant moments
watching them and decides that he wants to become friends with them but everything
goes wrong since they all get scared and Félix manages
to shoot him.

In the end, he demands a partner since the monster had

understood that no human being would want to give him
a chance.

Víctor decided to go on a trip, to be able to meet with

several scientists to fulfill his promise, together with his
friend, so they both went to England. The two parted
ways and Victor continued with the promise of creating
a mate for the monster.

He decides to renounce that promise without knowing

that this would result in the death of his friend, Clerval,
and his father.
AUTHOR’S BIOGRAPHY

Daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. Mary

Shelley was a British writer, born in 1797 and she died of a
brain tumor in 1851.

A few days after her birth, her mother died of a fever, leaving
her and her sister in the care of their father. They often visited
the cemetery where their mother was, there they learned to
read

She is considered one of the best science fiction writers. She

wrote works such as Frankenstein, Matilda, The Last Man, and Valperga, among
many others. Frankenstein, his greatest work, was born from a bet he made with
Lord Bryon. It's based on one of his dreams. She married Percy Bysshe Shelley, he
had a wife and when she found out about the unión (Harriet Westbrook) she
committed suicide. Mary and Percy had a son and before Percy was 30 years old he
died during one of his trips.

PROTAGNIST
Victor Frankenstein is the protagonist since he narrates the work, all the events that
happen are because of him.
He is an ambitious man who sought to create life, all these ideas as a result of his
fixation on science. By creating the monster, he seals his fate with a series of
unfortunate events such as the death of his brother, the conviction of Justice, the
murder of Henry and the death of his father. Despite all of this though, he adamantly
refuses to confess to the crimes and that the stalking was his creation, even when
things got out of hand.
The character had developments but bad ones since he became dehumanized, he
forgot what sanity was and experienced stress and anxiety as a result of what he
had done, in the end he died and the story was left in the hands of Robert Walton.
ANTAGONIST
The antagonist is the monster that Dr. Frankenstein created, seeing himself hurt by
humans he decided to stop trying to be nice.
An antagonist is one who acts contrary to the hero or the protagonist of the work, in
this case, the monster killed William because the boy screamed when he saw how
horrible he was, he burned down the house of his saviors when he saw that they all
fled in terror of him and killed Victor's friend when he saw that he had refused to
finish the job he demanded; make another being equal to him (but a woman) to avoid
feeling alone.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LITERARY MOVEMENT

† Uses dark and picturesque landscapes

† There is melodrama, and a general atmosphere of exoticism, mystery, fear

and dread.
† There are omens, curses and tragedies
† Supernatural and paranormal activity
† The love (this love often ends in tragedy)
† The villan (they were often men)

FEATURES OF THE GOTHIC GENRE IN THE NOVEL

The book belongs to the Gothic movement, therefore the characteristics of the
movement that can be seen in the book are:

 The location, in France, Geneva, England (very little), Scotland, Germany,

etc.
 The colors (black, white, grey..)
 The stages (mountains, deserted forests, lakes, abandoned places)
 Drama
 Horror
 Deaths
 Monsters
 A villian /antagonnist
 Romance (tragedy)

POINT OF VIEW
Putting myself on the doctor's side, I understand that he wanted to achieve a
scientific advance that in the future could be used to make more discoveries. As I
already said, he was an ambitious man and thirsty to know more. However, he forgot
about his humanity. He did things that I think are not right, all in order to develop that
idea he had in mind. The condemnation, as he tells her, is nothing more than the
weight of her actions.

Life and death will always be an enigma, no one knows how it happens, it just
happens.

And siding with the monster, he just wanted someone to be nice to him, he wanted
to receive love. She clearly didn't know what was going on, why she was so different
from the others. What he did to the doctor's loved ones was wrong because in the
end, no matter what he looked like, he became the monster he didn't want to be.

CONCLUSIONS
It is a good book, it has a story that catches you. The details of the various scenes,
feelings, or occasions are very well narrated, however, it may become a bit heavy to
read because of its heavy adjectives.

The plot twists are unexpected and I think that what can be seen in the book is the
hypocrisy of the human being. It was better to kill ten innocents than to let one heretic
go free.
