Chapter 8 SET 2 Q
Chapter 8 SET 2 Q
iii) Write a similar constraint for y if at most 10 pallets of paver B can be transported
in one load.
b) Details of pavers are as follows:
Paver A Paver B
Weight (kg) 8 5
i) Find the weight of 4 pallets of paver A,
No. per pallet 150 180
and 6 pallets of paver B.
iii) If a weight limit of 10.8 tonnes applies to each truck load, write another constraint
on x and y.
c) Sketch a graph of all constraints, leaving the feasible region unshaded, and identify all
corner points.
d) Develop an objective function if a pallet of pavers A yields a profit of $2500, and a
pallet of pavers B yields $2300
e) For any order, find the number of pallets of each type of paver that yields the
greatest profit, and find this maximum profit.
2. You need to buy some filing cabinets. You know that Cabinet X costs $10 per unit,
requires six square feet of floor space, and holds eight cubic feet of files. Cabinet Y
costs $20 per unit, requires eight square feet of floor space, and holds twelve cubic feet
of files. You have been given $140 for this purchase, though you don't have to spend
that much. The office has room for no more than 72 square feet of cabinets.
a. Write a constraint for cost. [1]
e. Graph all constraints from parts a, b and c on the same set of axes shade the
feasible region. [3]
f. How many of which model should you buy, in order to maximize storage volume?
[3]
3. A company manufacturers two products, A and B. Each product must undergo three
chemical processes for the number of hours specified in the table below.
Process A B
P1 10 5
P2 2 4
P3 3 3
The minimum amount of time required for processes 1, 2 and 3 is 70, 28 and 36 hours
respectively.
a. Using this information, construct the five constraints in this situation.
b. Sketch the 5 constraints on the same set of axes.
c. Shade the feasible region and label it clearly.
f. Find the minimum cost of the chemical processes associated with manufacturing
the products above.
