WORKSHEET 23 & 24 – FIRST QUARTER

Topic: POLYNOMIAL EQUATIONS

MELC: Illustrates polynomial equations using synthetic division and Remainder Theorem.

A Polynomial Equation is an equation that can be written in the form: Remainder Theorem
𝑎𝑛 𝑥 𝑛 + 𝑎𝑛−1 𝑥 𝑛−1 + ⋯ + 𝑎1 𝑥 + 𝑎0 = 0 * If a polynomial P(x) is divided by x – c, then the
where the nonnegative integer n is called the degree of the remainder R is R = P(c).
polynomial and coefficients 𝑎0 , 𝑎1, … , 𝑎𝑛 are real numbers.
𝒂𝒏 is the leading coefficient. The standard form of the equation is **A value of the variable which satisfies the
written in terms of descending powers of the variable x. polynomial equation is called a root of the equation.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
A. Determine whether the given equation is an example of a polynomial equation. If Yes, state its degree
(D) and leading coefficient (LC), then write it on its standard form (SF). If No, state the reason why.

1.) 2x3 + 4x4 – 5 – x = 0 2.) √5𝑥 5 − 2𝑥 2 + 8 = 0 3.) 3𝑥 6.2 + 7𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 + 2 = 0

D: 4; LC: 4 (Why?) D: 5; LC: √𝟓 (Why?) No! because of 6.2 (Why?)
SF: 4x + 2x – x – 5 = 0 (How?) SF: √𝟓𝒙𝟓 − 𝟐𝒙𝟐 + 𝟖 = 𝟎 (How?)
4 3

B. Identify whether the given value is a root of the given polynomial equation. Use either the Remainder
Theorem or the Synthetic Division. If the given value is a root, find the other roots otherwise state the
remainder and find all the roots.

4.) x3 – 2x2 – 5x + 6 = 0; x = - 2 5.) 3x3 + x2 – 12x – 4 = 0 ; x = 1

P(1) = 3(1)3 + (1)2 – 12(1) – 4 = R (Why?)
−2 1 −2 −5 6 R = – 12 (How?)
−2 8 −6
Hence, x = 1 is not a root (Why?)
1 −4 3 0
The roots are: – 2, - 1/3 & 2 (How?)

Hence, x = - 2 is a root (Why?) Note: You may use the Remainder

x2 – 4x + 3 = 0 (Why?) (x – 1)(x – 3) = 0 (Why?) Theorem for item #4 and Synthetic
Other roots: 1 and 3 (How?) Division for #5

TRY IT YOURSELF!!!
*For the instructions on numbers 1 to 3, use the given directions on A. of the ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES
and for item numbers 4 to 6, use B. Write your answers on the blank space provided. God bless! (“,)

1.) 5x3/4 – x + 2 = 0 4.) x3 – 4x2 – 4x + 16 = 0; x = 1

2.) 4x5 + 7x8 – 16x – 3 = 0 5.) 2x3 – x2 – 13x – 6 = 0; x = – 2

_____________________________________ ___________________________________

3.) (2x5 – 4)(x – 9) = 0 6.) x4 – 8x3 + 22x2 – 24x + 9 = 0; x = 3
