WORKSHEET 25 & 26 – FIRST QUARTER

Topic: POLYNOMIAL EQUATIONS

MELC: Illustrates polynomial equations using Factor Theorem and Rational Root Theorem.
Rational Root Theorem
Remember: Factor Theorem * Let P(x) = anxn + an – 1xn – 1 +…+ a1x + a0 be a polynomial with
* Let P(x) be a polynomial. 𝑝
a. If P(c) = 0, then x – c is a factor of P(x). integer coefficients. If is a rational number in lowest term and
𝑞
b. If x – c is a factor of P(x), then P(c) = 0. is a root of P(x), then p is a factor of a0 and q is a factor of an.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
A.) Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether or not the binomial is a factor of the polynomial
expression. If it is, then find the other factors, otherwise find all the factors.

1.) P(x) = x3 – 5x2 – x + 5; x – 1 2.) P(x) = 2x4 + x3 – 9x2 – 4x + 4; x – 1

c = 1, → P(1) = (1)3 – 5(1)2 – (1) + 5 (Why?) c = 1, → P(1) = 2(1)4 + (1)3 – 9(1)2 – 4(1) + 4 (Why?)
P(1) = 0 (How?); Therefore: x – 1 is a Factor P(1) = – 6 (How?); Therefore: x – 1 is NOT a Factor
Other Factors: x – 5 & x + 1 (How?) All Factors: x + 1, x – 2, x + 2 & 2x – 1 (How?)

*Can we use Synthetic Division and Depressed Polynomial to find all or other factors of P(x)? How?
**On example 1, can we use factoring by grouping to find easily the factors of P(x)? If yes, How?

B.) List all the possible rational roots (PRR) of the polynomial equation, and then use the Synthetic Division
to find the actual solutions or roots.

3.) x3 + 3x2 – 6x – 8 = 0 4.) 9x4 + 9x3 – 19x2 – x + 2 = 0

𝟏 𝟏 𝟐 𝟐
p = - 8 & q = 1 → PRR: {±𝟏, ±𝟐, ±𝟒, ±𝟖} (Why?) p = 2 & q = 9 → PRR: {±𝟏, ±𝟐, ± , ± , ± , ± } (Why?)
𝟑 𝟗 𝟑 𝟗
Solutions/Roots: – 4, – 1 & 2 (How?) Solutions/Roots: – 2, -1/3, 1/3 & 1 (How?)

TRY IT YOURSELF!!!
*Answer each item. For item numbers 1 to 2, use the directions in the ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES for
Part A; while for item numbers 3 to 4, use the direction in Part B. You may use a separate sheet of paper
for your solutions. Write your answers on the blank space provided. God bless! (“,)
