Practice Exercise 1B

I. Below are the data showing the population of students in the Criminology Department of
XYZ University.

1st Year- 240 2nd Year- 140 3rd Year- 160 4th Year- 60

Use stratified sampling to determine the sample size from each year level if the total number of
samples to be drawn is 500.

STRATA N P=N/Population n = Sample size*P

1st Year 240 240/600 = 0.40 500 x .40 = 200

2nd Year 140 140/600 = 0.23 500 x .23 = 115

3rd Year 160 160/600 = 0.27 500 x .27 = 135

4th Year 60 60/600 = 0.40 500 x .10 = 50

Total 600 .100 / 1 500

II. Using Slovin’s formula compute the number of samples to be taken from a given
population using a specified margin of error. Show your solutions.

1. 23567; margin of error is 1%

n = N / 1 + Ne 2
n = 23567 /1 + 23567 (.01)2
n = 23567 /1+23567(.0001)
n = 23567 /1+ 2.3567
n = 23567 /3.3567
n = 7,021

2. 2000; margin of error is 5 %.

n = N / 1 + Ne 2
n = 2 000 /1 + 2 000 (.05) 2
n = 2 000 /1+ 2 000 (.0025)
n = 2 000 /1+ 5
n = 2 000 /6
n = 333

3. 2000; margin of error is 3%

n = N / 1 + Ne 2
n = 2 000 /1 + 2 000 (.03) 2
n = 2 000 /1+ 2 000 (.0009)
n = 2 000 /1+ 1.80
n = 2 000 /2.80
n = 714
