Students, who successfully complete this module, will be able to equip themselves with the
necessary competence to discharge all the responsibilities of a project manager. At the end of
this module, the qualifying student should be able to apply project management principles in
practice.

So, try to apply the theory in practice by applying it to your experiences of managing people and
to how you have been managed as a person, or just enjoy integrating the subject matter into
your work! In order to be successful in this module, you will need to work continuously
throughout the semester and resolve to do the assignments properly. Because this is a fully
online module, with continuous assessment, you will need to use myUnisa to study and
complete the formative assessments for this course. You will, therefore, need to visit the module
site on myUnisa for PRM3701 frequently. The module site for Semester 1 is PRM3701-2023-
S1, and the site for Semester 2 is PRM3701-2023-S2. In addition to this tutorial letter, you will
also receive printed copies of some of the online study material for your module.

This tutorial letter refers to the module Project Management (PRM3701) and contains module-
specific information related to the study material for the module, the purpose of and outcomes
for the module, relevant contact details, module-related resources, student support services, a
module-specific study plan, assessment and frequently asked questions. As this module is
offered online, it is important that you read this tutorial letter thoroughly, keep it in a safe place
4
PRM3701/101/3/2023

and then log on to the myUnisa site for this module. Over and above the inventory letter and
other items, you should also have received the brochure, Study @ Unisa, which contains
important information. This brochure is also available on myUnisa.

The Directorate: Despatch should supply you with the following tutorial matter for this module:

• Tutorial Letter PRM3701/101/3/2023 (this tutorial letter)

• Study guide for PRM3701

Note: Some of this tutorial matter may not be available when you register. This tutorial matter
will be posted to you as soon as possible, but is also available on myUnisa. While the printed
material may appear different from the online study material, it is the same, as it has been
copied from the myUnisa website.

Feedback on Assignment 03 will be provided in Tutorial Letter 201 and feedback on

Assignment 06 in Tutorial Letter 202 which will only be available on myUnisa a few weeks after
the due date of this assignment. These tutorial letters will only be available electronically
and will not be printed. Only online feedback will be provided on Assignments 01, 02, 04,
05.

You will need to use myUnisa to study and complete some of the learning activities for this
course. Go to the website at https://my.unisa.ac.za and log in using your student number and
password. You will see PRM3701-23-S1 (for semester 1 students) or PRM3701-23-S2 (for
semester 2 students) in the row of modules displayed in the orange blocks at the top of the
webpage. Select the More tab if you cannot find the module you require in the orange blocks.
Then click on the module you wish to open.

Wishing you every success in your studies!

2 OVERVIEW OF PRM3701

2.1 Purpose

Students, who successfully complete this module, will be able to equip themselves with the
necessary competence to discharge all the responsibilities of a project manager. At the end of
this module, the qualifying student should be able to apply project management principles in
practice.

This module is delivered using myUnisa and the internet. Peer group interaction and community
engagement are also included in some of the activities. I will interact with you on myUnisa and
via e-mail.

2.2 Outcomes

For this module, we hope you will be able to familiarise yourself with the core aspects of project
management and the tools and techniques used. Therefore, this will enable you to quickly

profession. The workplace for the active project manager can be an immensely satisfying and a
rewarding one; conversely, it can also be hard and unforgiving. Project management implies
taking on a lot of responsibility and, therefore, stakeholders will be looking to you to produce
project results.

5
PRM3701/101/3/2023

thereby also help you to decide whether project management is a good career choice for you.

For this module, you will have to master the following outcomes:

• Specific outcome 1: Students must understand what the “life” of a project entails,
including general project management concepts, needs identification, proposed
solutions and project implementation.

• Specific outcome 2: Students must understand certain selected project planning and
control tools and techniques, including project planning, project scheduling, project
schedule control, project resource considerations and project cost planning and
performance.

• Specific outcome 3: Students must understand what project success entails,

5.2 Important notice on Curriculum Transformation

“Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In
response to this charter, we have placed curriculum transformation high on the teaching and
learning agenda. Curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred
scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of
teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These
pillars inform the curriculum transformation standards as outlined in the Curriculum
Transformation Guidelines developed by the Curriculum Transformation Unit following the
analysis of Colleges Curriculum Transformation Frameworks. The curriculum transformation
standards will be integrated at both programme and module levels as a phased-in approach.
You will notice a marked change in the teaching and learning strategy implemented by Unisa,
together with how the content is conceptualised in your modules. We encourage you to
embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa in a responsive way within the framework
of transformation”.
Please find a glossary under additional resoucres for all Project Management
terminology in the different languages.
At UNISA we pledge to do the following:

• Transforming epistemology, knowledge and scholarship

• Changing institutional culture

• Rethinking systems and policies

• Rethinking governance, leadership and management

• Promoting a discourse of change

5.3 Printed support material

Because we want you to be successful in this module, we also provide you with some of the
study material in printed format. This will allow you to read the study material even if you are not
online.

The printed study material will be sent to you at the beginning of the semester, but you do not
have to wait for it before you start studying – you can go online as soon as you have registered
and find all your study material there. The material we will send you is an offline copy of the
formal content for the module. Having an offline copy will enable you to study for this module
WITHOUT having to use the internet or to go to an internet café. It will save you time and
money, and you will be able to read and re-read the material and start doing the activities.

It is imperative that you log into myUnisa regularly. I recommend that you log in at least once a
week or every 10 days to do the following:
• Check for new announcements. You can also set your myLife e-mail account to receive
the announcement e-mails on your cellphone.
• Do the Discussion Forum activities. When you complete certain activities in each
workbook, I want you to share your answers with the other people in your group. You can
9
PRM3701/101/3/2023

read the instructions and even prepare your answers offline, but you will need to go online
to post your messages.

I hope that by giving you extra ways to study the material and practise all of the activities, this
system will help you succeed in the module. To get the most out of the course you MUST go
online regularly to complete the activities and assignments on time.

Remember, the printed support material is back-up material for everything that is found online
on myUnisa. It does not contain any extra information. In other words, do NOT wait for the
printed support material to arrive before you start studying.

5.4 Library services and resource information

5.5 E-tutors

Please be informed that, with effect from 2013, Unisa started offering online tutorials (e-tutoring)
to students registered for modules at NQF levels 5, 6 and 7 (qualifying first-year, second-year
and third-year modules).

Once you have been registered for PRM3701, you will be allocated to a group of students with
whom you will be interacting during the tuition period as well as an e-tutor who will be your
tutorial facilitator (high risk modules). Thereafter you will receive an sms informing you about
your group, the name of your e-tutor and instructions on how to log onto myUnisa in order to
receive further information on the e-tutoring process.

Online tutorials are conducted by qualified e-tutors who are appointed by Unisa and are offered
free of charge. All you need to be able to participate in e-tutoring is a computer with an internet
connection. If you live close to a Unisa Regional Centre or a Telecentre contracted with Unisa,
you are welcome to visit any of these to access the internet. E-tutoring takes place on myUnisa
where you are expected to connect with other students in your allocated group. It is the role of
the e-tutor to guide you through your study material during this interaction process. In order to
get the most out of online tutoring, you need to participate in the online discussions that the e-
tutor will be facilitating.
10
PRM3701/101/3/2023

5.6 Predatory providers of classes

Please be aware of the existence of multiple fraudulent and predatory providers of classes and
guidance to Unisa students. Please note that Unisa does not have agreements with any of
these agencies/schools/colleges to provide tuition or support to our students. Unisa also does
not provide these predators with study material, guidelines or your contact information.

These providers may not have the necessary expertise to assist you and often charge
exorbitant fees. If you receive an invitation from any agency or College, it is best to confirm with
your lecturer if the provider is a legitimate Unisa partner.
5.7 TVET Agreements

Unisa, however, has agreements with a number of technical and vocational education and
training (TVET) Colleges to provide contact tuition and support for students in the following
Higher Certificates:
• Higher Certificate in Economic & Management Sciences
• Higher Certificate in Banking
• Higher Certificate in Tourism
• Higher Certificate in Accounting Sciences

More information on this is available on the Unisa website.

5.8 Additional information

For information on the various student support systems and services available at Unisa (e.g.
student counselling, tutorial classes and language support), please consult the Study @ Unisa
brochure.

6 HOW TO STUDY FOR THE PRM3701 MODULE

6.1 What does it mean to study online?

Studying for this module may differ from studying some of your other modules at Unisa.
• All your study material and learning activities for online modules are designed to be
delivered online on myUnisa. Although we give you a printed copy to support your
studies, the module is designed to be delivered online.
• All of your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you do all your
activities and submit all your assignments on myUnisa. In other words, you may NOT post
your assignments to Unisa using the South African Post Office.
• All of the communication between you and the University happens online. Lecturers
will communicate to you by e-mail, and using the Announcements and the Discussion
Forums tools. You can also use these ways to ask questions and contact your lecturers.

11
PRM3701/101/3/2023

7 CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

7.1 General remarks

PRM3701 is a “continuous assessment module” and therefore does not make use of a final
summative examination. Instead, for this module, all of your assignments will contribute towards
your final result. Each of the assignments contributes a certain percentage (indicated as a
weight below) towards the final result, so you are able to manage your own learning throughout
the semester.

The benefits of continuous assessment include:

• You will not have to complete a final exam for this module.
• You will not be in a stressful examination hall with hundreds of other students.
• During the semester you will have a good idea of what your final result will be.
• Each of the assignments during the semester will ensure that you work through all of the
study material.

There will be six assignments for this module, all contributing towards your final mark. All six
assignments are online assignments which you will complete on myUnisa. Pay attention to the
assessment criteria for each assignment as these criteria will help you to understand what is
required of you.

7.2 Submission of assignments

You can only complete your assignments for this module electronically via myUnisa. Please do
NOT wait until the last date provided before you complete your assignments on myUnisa,
as the system might be very busy or down for routine maintenance.

PLEASE NOTE:
You cannot submit or post a paper copy of your assignment. You also CANNOT email
copies of your assignment to your lecturer.

7.3 Compulsory assignments

There are SIX compulsory assignments for this module. There are non-negotiable submission
deadlines for each of these six assignments. Although it is open book assignments, you will
need to study the work before attempting to complete the assignments. As it is a timed
assessment, you will not have time to look for the answers in your study material.

Specific due dates have been determined for the assignments. A few weeks after the due date
of written assignments tutorial letters (Tutorial Letter 201 and Tutorial Letter 202) will be made
12
PRM3701/101/3/2023

available on myUnisa with the answers and guidelines for those assignments. The due dates of
the compulsory assignments and their unique numbers are reflected below.

In answering your assignment you are required to read the content of your module as well as
additional readings provided in the open educational resources (OERs) and massive open
online courses (MOOCs). You will be required to complete cetain content before you can
access your assignments.

Please note that all assignments can be found online on myUnisa. These assisgnments
will be made available during the course of the semester, and an announcement will be
sent out each time an assignment is uploaded. All the assignments will NOT be available
at the beginning of each semester.

7.4 Final mark

The marks obtained for all six compulsory assignments contribute 100% towards your final
mark; there is no formal examination for this module. The combined weighted averages of
your assignment marks must be 50% or higher for you to pass the module.

For example:

Assignment
Assignment name contribution to final Your mark
mark (weight)
Assignment 01 10% 60%
Assignment 02 10% 80%
Assignment 03 30% 40%
Assignment 04 10% 50%
Assignment 05 10% 60%
Assignment 06 30% 80%

The final mark is calculated as follows:

Final mark = (10% x 60%) + (10% x 80%) + (30% x 40%) + (10% x 50%) + (10% x 60%) +
(30% x 80)
14
PRM3701/101/3/2023

= 06 + 08 + 12 + 5 + 6 + 24
= 61%

You will need a final mark of at least 40% to qualify for a supplementary opportunity.

7.5 Format of the assignments
