Learner’s Tasks

Lesson Overview

When we talk about the author’s purpose in writing, we refer to the why
behind his writing. What motivated the author to produce his work? What is
his intent of writing and what does he hope to achieve? The author’s purpose
is the reason why he decided to write about something in the first place.
Authors may have more than one purpose in writing. It can be to
persuade, to entertain, to inform or to describe. Purpose can be stated
explicitly or readers may have to infer the intent. Reflective readers are able
to analyze information when they can describe author’s purpose.
An author writes with one of four general purposes in mind:
1. To Inform

 When an author’s purpose is to inform, he usually wishes to

enlighten his readers about a real-world topic. Often, he will do
this by providing lots of facts. Informational texts are geared
toward imparting information to the reader with the purpose of
educating them on a given topic.
 A text that is written to inform may entertain readers. For
example, many readers find reading the newspaper to be very
entertaining, but the primary purpose of the majority of the text is
to provide information. From other reference texts, some readers
may learn about ninjas, dinosaurs, or robots solely for enjoyment,
but the author’s main purpose in writing such texts is to inform the
reader.

1
Examples of Texts That Are Written to Inform
 Expository Essays or Articles
 Instructions or Directions
 Encyclopedias or Other Reference Texts

2. To Persuade

 In a text that is written to persuade, the author’s primary purpose

is to compel readers to take action, to convince them of an idea
through argument, or to reaffirm their existing beliefs.
 To identify when the author’s purpose is to persuade, you
should ask yourself if you feel the writer is trying to get you to
believe something or take a specific action. You should learn to
identify the various tactics and strategies used in persuasive
writing such as repetition, various types of supporting evidence,
hyperbole, attacking opposing viewpoints, forceful phrases,
emotive imagery and photographs etc.

Examples of Texts That Are Written to Persuade

 Advertisements
 Campaign Speeches
 Persuasive Letters or Notes
3. To Entertain
 When an author’s chief purpose is to entertain the reader, he will
endeavor to keep things as interesting as possible. Things happen
in books that are written to entertain, whether in the form of an
action packed plot, inventive characterizations, or sharp
dialogue.
 Not surprisingly, a great deal of fiction is written with the aim of
entertaining, especially genre fiction. For example, we find
entertaining examples in science fiction, romance, and fantasy -
to name but a few.
 When a writer is attempting to entertain or amuse the reader he
will use a variety of techniques to engage their attention. He may
employ cliffhangers at the end of a chapter, for example. He
may weave humor into their story, or even have characters tell
jokes. In the case of a thriller, action-packed scene may follow
on action-packed scene as the drama builds to a crescendo.
Think of the melodrama of a soap opera here, rather than the
subtle touch of an art house masterpiece.

2
Examples of Texts that Are Written to Entertain
 Stories
 Poems
 Dramas
 Songs
4. To Describe
 Often writers will use words to describe something in more
detail than be conveyed in a photograph alone. After all, they
say ‘a picture paints a thousand words’ and text can help get
us beyond the one dimensional appearance of things.
 We can find lots of descriptive writing in obvious places like
short stories, novels and other forms of fiction where the writer
wishes to paint a picture in the reader’s imagination. We can
also find lots of writing with the purpose of description in
nonfiction too - in product descriptions or descriptive essays,
for example.
 In the case of fiction writing which describes, the reader will
notice the writer using lots of sensory details in the text.
Reflective readers are able to analyze information when they can
describe author’s purpose. You can use the guide questions below in
evaluating the author’s purpose of a certain text or selection.

 Based on the title, why do think the author wrote this selection?
 Which words do you think best describe the main reason the author
wrote this selection: to provide readers with information? To describe a
person, event, or issue? To express their own thoughts and feelings? To
persuade readers to think about an issue in a certain way and to take
action? Or to entertain the reader?
 How did the author influence your response to the selection?
 Was the author’s purpose specifically stated?
 Do you think that the author achieved his/her intended purposes?
 What examples from the text support your conclusions about author’s
purpose?

DOH reiterated that all COVID-19 vaccines issued with Emergency Use
Authorization (EUA) by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are
safe and effective. Before a vaccine can be issued with an EUA, it has to
undergo rigorous evaluation processes involving the Department of Science
and Technology, FDA, and various vaccine expert groups. Safety and
efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines are scrutinized based on latest available data
and scientific evidence from global clinical trials. All vaccines available now
in the country are safe, effective, and have been found to reduce risk of
severe illness and prevent death after completing the required doses.

Understanding the Distance Learning Delivery Modalities

Adopting to the challenges of the times in fulfilling its mandate,
the DepEd would be using blended and distance learning programs during
this period of COVID-19 pandemic consistent with the President’s preference
that children would not be sent to school until it is safe to do so.

There are three kinds of DLDM, the Modular Distance Learning (MDL), the
Blended Learning (BL), and Homeschooling.

The MDL, which is for learners who do not have internet connectivity. The
Printed or Digital Modules (PDM) are delivered to the homes of learners or picked
up by their parents or guardians at designated places within coordinated
schedules. Digital means modules (e-modules) are saved in USB/flash drives, CDs,
OTGs. To be able to access the content of these materials, laptops, computers or
tablets are needed. For the Online Distance Learning (ODL), this modality is
applicable to learners as well as teachers with technology devices in which
internet connectivity is required.

5
The second DLDM is the Blended Learning (BL) which is a combination of
ODL, MDL and R/TVI. The learners make use of computers, tablets, smart phones,
CD/DVD, USB storage, TV/Radio and Printed Modules in learning. Through this
modality learners are not required to report to school, physical distancing is
observed and the number of people going out from their homes is minimized.

The third DLDM is Homeschooling, It is the alternative learning modality

that provides learners with access to formal education while staying in a home-
based environment with a parent, guardian or tutors as authorized learning
facilitators instead of classroom teachers.
