Independent Learning Activity 2

Variables in the News

Instructions:

1. During your independent learning days, watch, read or listen to any news of any kind.
2. Applying the concept of independent and dependent variable, analyze the elements of the news and
extract the CAUSE scenario as well as the EFFECT scenario.
3. For example, you’ve seen a news on the internet about an old lady getting hit by a car. You need first
to discuss the facts of the news and analyze the cause of the incident and its effect.
4. Write your ILA on your notebook:
5. A table has been provided for you to fill up

Title of the News Old woman hit by a pickup truck, severely injured

Date and source September 13, 2022

ABS-CBN News Channel Kapamilya Online Live YouTube Channel

Brief overview of the news A CCTV footage of a road accident went viral and was featured in the news.
An 82-year-old woman from Cainta, Rizal was crossing the street when
suddenly a red Toyota Hilux hit her. She was brought to the hospital with
major injuries but luckily, she was not dead.

Cause incidence The incident happened on a rainy afternoon. Given the weather at that time,
road visibility us not very clear. Additional facts of the report also revealed
that the old lady had been suffering with dementia and sometimes is not
aware of her surroundings. Investigation also revealed that the driver of the
Toyota Hilux was a 17-year-old with a student’s license and is not
accompanied by a non-professional driver.

Effects or consequences Both external factors and internal factors led to the devastating news.
Because of zero visibility, the student driver was not able to see the old lady

dementia made the incident more aggravating. Criminal and civil charges
may be placed to the driver of the Toyota Hilux.

- Cause incidence has been not been elaborately discussed.
- Effects or consequence details are somehow justifiable with the cause
incidence.

Good - Has missed two elements of the table

- Cause incidence has been not been well discussed.
- Effects or consequence details are not justifiable with the cause incidence.

Fair - Has missed three or more elements of the table

- Cause incidence has been not been thoroughly discussed.
- Effects or consequence details are not justifiable with the cause incidence.

Needs - Has not done the task

Tabletop Activity on Variables

Instructions:

1. Convene again with your research group.

2. Revisit your presented research study. This time extract the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE and
DEPENDENT VARIABLE.
3. Once identified, classify the IV and the DV to either CONTINUOUS or DISCRETE VARIABLE with its
specific type.
4. Justify why have you identified the variable as to INDPENDENT and DEPENDENT likewise as to
CONTINUOUS and DISCRETE with its specific types.
5. Accomplish this task by completing the table below. (The teacher may provide a printed table for each
group to fill up. This GPT can be achieved during the 120 minutes subject engagement).
