Procedure – Locating the Sill


Plates on a Foundation

▪ Step 3 – Establish a control line


between corners 1 and 2.
▪ Step 4 – Along the control line and
at corner 1, measure the sill plate
width and mark point A.

Procedure – Locating the Sill Plates on a Foundation, cont.

▪ Step 5 – From point A, measure along the control line the


amount determined in step 2; measure the inside-sill-plate to
inside-sill-plate dimension to locate point B.
▪ Step 6 – From point B, erect a perpendicular line using a
multiple of the 3-4-5 method.
▪ Step 7 – Extend the line established in step 6 to the end of the
foundation wall at corner 4.

▪ Step 4 – Install sill sealer.


▪ Step 5 – Place sill plate over the
anchor bolts and lightly tighten.

▪ Step 4 – Stretch a line from the top of one exterior foundation


wall sill plate to the top of the opposite exterior foundation wall
sill plate at the points established in step 3.
▪ Step 5 – Measure down to the top of the pier footing from the
dry line and record the measurement.

▪ Step 1 – Measure in from the outside edge of the sill plate the
thickness of the rim joist.
▪ Step 2 – Snap a chalk line between the marks.

Procedure – Framing Floor Openings

▪ Step 1 – Position and fasten the inside trimmers with the


ends aligned to the chalk line on the sill plate.
▪ Step 2 – Mark the position of the double outside headers.
▪ Step 3 – Place the outside header pieces between the
inside trimmers.

▪ Step 5 – Mark the position of the tail joists on the headers.

Procedure – Installing Floor Joists, cont

▪ Step 1 – Set the floor joists with the crown up on the layout
with their ends aligned to the chalk line in the sill plate.
▪ Step 2 – Toenail the joists to the sill plate.

▪ Step 3 – Lap the


joists on the beam
or wall, fasten them
down, and face-nail
them to each other.

Procedure – Installing Band Joists, cont.

▪ Step 1 – Position the band joist against the end of the floor
joists flush to the end of the sill plate.
▪ Step 2 – Fasten the band joist to the end joist.
▪ Step 3 – Square the next joist up from the sill plate and mark
its position on the top edge of the band joist.

Procedure – Determining the Length of the Cross Bridging

▪ Step 5 – Position the blade of the square on the edge of the


bridging material, aligning the spacing between the floor joists on
the edge farthest away from you.

▪ Step 9 – Hold the tongue of the square with the width of the floor
joist dimension on the point established in step 7.

▪ Step 3 – Fasten the bridging on alternate sides of the previously


shaped line in each joist bay.
▪ Step 4 – Fasten a second piece of bridging to the adjacent joist
in the same joist bay.

Procedure – Installing a Tongue and Groove Subfloor

▪ Step 2 – Position the first sheet on the joists, aligning the


square edge of the sheet to the end of the band joist and the
grooved edge of the sheet to the chalk line.
▪ Step 3 – Verify that the other end of the sheet breaks on the
center of a joist.

Procedure – Installing a Tongue


and Groove Subfloor, cont.

▪ Step 7 – Fasten the sheet to the


joists aligned to the marks made in
step 5, approximately 3˝ away from
the grooved edge of the sheet.

Tip

Floor joists are not perfectly straight.


They are straightened by aligning them
to the layout marks in step 5.

Procedure – Installing a Tongue and Groove Subfloor, cont.

▪ Step 14 – Stand the sheet with the tongue edge on top of the
joists against the grooved edge of the fastened sheet.
▪ Step 15 – Lay the sheet down on top of the joists.

Procedure – Installing a Tongue and Groove Subfloor, cont.

▪ Step 17 – Drive the tongue of


the cut sheet into the groove of
the fastened sheet with a
sledgehammer and a 6´-0˝ to
8´-0˝ 2 x 4 placed against the
grooved edge of the cut sheet.

Tip

Verify that the groove on the sheet


to be installed is aligned with the
tongue of the installed sheet.
