Present storage to your host

In the previous storage configuration lab, you should have created Virtual Volumes
for each of the platforms that are part of the classroom environment. In this exercise,
you will present the storage to each of the storage clients that you have configured.
1. Navigate to the ‘Provisioning’ manager and locate a Virtual Volume that you
created in a previous exercise.
2. Right-click on the VV that you wish to present and select ‘Export...’ from the
context menu to launch the ‘Export Virtual Volume’ wizard.
3. In panel 1 of the wizard your VV should be highlighted in the list. Confirm the
selection and click ‘Next’ to progress to panel 2.
4. Select the host that you wish to present the VV to as a VLUN.

5. In order to present the VLUN via all visible paths you should leave the ‘Port’
value set to ‘<none>’.
6. The LUN value can automatically select the next available LUN ID on the host if
you check the ‘Auto’ checkbox. Else you can select the LUN ID for yourself.
7. Click ‘Finish’ to complete the Export process.
8. If you are not currently logged into the Windows host that you just exported the
VLUN to, log in there now as Administrator.

Multipath Management

Prepare your Windows host with native MPIO

Important
! MPIO software is required in any configuration in which a single host has more
than one data path connection to the external storage array. Without MPIO
software installed, the multiple paths to the array would cause ghost drives to
appear in the disk management utility. This would also lead to not being able to
format or mount logical disks. Once MPIO software is installed, it should not be
removed unless only one data path exists between the host server and the
external storage array.

1. Logon to your windows server and open a command prompt window and run
the following command:

ocsetup MultipathIo /norestart

mpclaim –n –i –a

2. type in mpclaim –e so can see the effects of the MPIO before and after
implementation.

3. Reboot the server.

Once the MPIO DSM is installed, no further configuration is required; however,
after initial installation, use Windows Server Device Manager to check that the
MPIO DSM has been installed correctly.

the mpclaim command differ in the before and after the reboot?

Changing load balance settings within MPIO

1. Right click ‘Computer’ on the desktop and select ‘manage’ from the new pop up
window.
2. Expand the Diagnostics field and select Device Manager

Run sdelete
You’ll be using sdelete now so run the installation file if it’s not already installed on
your system. If you’re using the HPVL the sdelete.exe file is in the Z:\SDelete folder.
1. On Windows systems, one way to zero out the free space is to run sdelete
(Secure Delete), a utility available on Microsoft’s web site . See the command
below.

sdelete command

2. The –c tells sdelete to do a single pass zeroing of all the free space in the
filesystem. Because Windows is writing all the zeros, this can take a few
minutes to run.
3. As the sdelete command completes, your User Used Size will start to
shrink. You might have noticed that the Reserved User Size has not reduced
yet. For potential performance reasons, we hold on to space just in case the
zeroing of data is a precursor to new writes.
