Objectives
In this lab, you perform tasks necessary to install the InForm Management Console
on your Windows server.
After completing this lab, you should be able to:
Identify the steps necessary to install the InForm Management Console
Launch the InForm Management Console GUI on the server
Navigate the InForm Management Console
Create a new user account
Access the on-line help
Introduction
This lab covers installation of InForm Management Console for HP 3PAR InServ
storage systems. The first part of the lab will have you install the InForm
Management Console on to one of the Windows servers within your lab group.
You will configure the InForm Management Console for the first time and explore
additional options in the GUI.
As you go through the lab, keep in mind the following:
Read and perform all of the lab steps that you can in the allowable time.
Concentrate on those tasks that might help you in diagnosis and troubleshooting
the array.
Note
Every lab configuration may be different, therefore keep in mind that the lab
exercises are not written for a specific configuration or one having a specific rack
infrastructure.
Note:
Ask your instructor if you are unable to locate the software
Installation Procedure:
1. Open the classroom share. Copy the IMC_setup (InForm Management Console
Setup) and CLI_setup (Command Line Interface Setup) install files over to the
local disk. (example: c:\temp) Execute the IMC_setup file to begin the
installation wizard. Click through any Security Warning (you may not see this if
you have copied the folder to a local drive).
7. Install the CLI by double-clicking the CLI_setup file that you copied to the local
disk in step 1. When the Introduction screen is displayed, click Next.
8. The Install Location screen is displayed. Click Next to accept the default
location.
10. The installation proceeds. When the installation is complete, click Done.
4. Spend some time familiarising yourself with the navigation of the InForm
Management Console. In particular visit each section of the administration
interface using the buttons located in the bottom left of the IMC – this is called
the ‘Manager Pane’. Document the name of each of the ‘Managers’ in the
following list:

5. Note that each of the sections (e.g. Systems, Hosts, Provisioning, etc.) has an
‘Introduction’ tab. These tabs give good information about the capabilities of
that particular section along with hyperlinks to relevant Help topics and you can
close the tabs individually when you have finished using them. To restore all the
tabs, select ‘Preferences...’ from the ‘View’ menu and at the bottom of the
‘Settings’ tab (you may need to scroll down) you will find the ‘Remove All
Tabs/Restore All Tabs’ buttons. Restore all the tabs if you have closed any
during your navigations.
6. Spend some time familiarising yourself with the content of the ‘Preferences’
dialog box. Restore the defaults for the ‘Data Format’ tab.
7. Navigate to the ‘Systems’ Manager. On the ‘Summary’ tab you will see some

12. Our next task is to create a New User. This user will have ‘Super’ privileges and
will have your own name. Please use the Password of ‘password’ when creating
this account! Navigate to the ‘Security’ Manager and select the ‘Users’ tab.
13. From the ‘Common Actions’ Panel click ‘Create User...’
Complete the credentials as requested. Enter your first initial and last name as
the user (ex. Jdoe), remember, ‘password’ as the password. Confirm the
password and the ‘Next >’ button will appear. Click it.
15. Select the Privilege to ‘super’ from the drop down box and click the ‘Add’ button
to allocate that privilege to the user that you are creating:
16. When you see that the privilege has been allocated to this new user:
Click ‘Next’ to progress to the summary screen and finally ‘Finish’ to create the
user.
17. Using the ‘File’ menu ‘Disconnect’ from the InServ clicking through the
confirmations.
18. ‘Connect’ again now using the new ‘super’ user that you just created. You will
use this account now for all of your administration.
Objectives
After completing this lab, you should be able to:
Launch the InForm Management Console
Review online Help
Manage and create common Provisioning Groups and Virtual Volumes
Introduction
This lab steps you through the processes involved in configuring your storage using
the InForm Management Console. You will become familiar with the user interface,
and how to create VLUNS for application server use.
4. Enter the name of the CPG in the Name field. Prefix the CPG name with the
number of your Lab Group (please refer to your instructor for this detail) as we
will be sharing access to the InServ. Remember the naming convention for CPG’s
suggests that we should be able to read the properties of the CPG from the name.
For example, Labgroup01 will name a CPG created for 15K FC disks using
RAID1using HA ‘Cage’ level redundancy might be called:
LG1_15K_FC_R1_cage.
Select the ‘Show advanced options panel(s)’ box in the bottom left and click ‘Yes’
to the confirmation (check the ‘don’t show me again’ box if you wish)
a) Use Step 1. General of the Wizard to create a CPG for your FC disks
using RAID1 using the appropriate naming convention and click ‘Next’ to
move to Step 2 Allocation Settings.
b) Step 2 allows you to select your desired level of Availability from Port,
Magazine or Cage as discussed in your module earlier. Select either
Magazine or leave the default (Cage).
c) Click to drop down the ‘Preferred Chunklets’ box:
You can opt to select either the Fast Chunklets from the outer edge of the
platter or the Slow Chunklets from the inner edge. Not surprisingly the
default is Fast. Leave it there. Click Next to proceed to Step 3 Disk Filter
e) Review the Summary page and click ‘Finish’ when you’re ready.
5. Using the wizard again create a CPG for your NL drives of the following
specifications:
• Name = don’t forget to use your LG prefix
• Device Type = NL
• Device Speed = 7K
• RAID Type = RAID 5
• Set Size = 3+1
• Availability = Magazine
Accept the defaults for all other values.
6. Expand the Management Tree and choose CPGs then click the CPGs tab in the
management window to view your newly created CPGs:
2. First give your Virtual Volume a name. You should prefix it with your LG
number (spaces are not permitted in the name).
3. Set the size (in GB) of the VV. Use a size less than or equal to 50 GB
please.
4. We will be using Thin Provisioning for this exercise so set the
‘Provisioning’ parameter to ‘Thinly Provisioned’.
5. Within ‘CPG’ choose your FC CPG – it’s up to you whether you use the
RAID1 or the RAID5 CPG.
10. If you opted to see the summary screen it might look something like this:
Templates
We will create a Virtual Volume Template. This will enable us to create multiple
virtual volumes with the same characteristics from a preset CPG.
1. Navigate to the ‘Provisioning’ manager and in the Tree expand
‘Templates’.
4. You will see all the variables listed toward the lower part of the screen.
Follow the example given in the screenshot below:
5. Click ‘Next’ and set your template to allocate Copy Space according to
your NL CPG. Give 80% Allocation Warning.
6. As there are no more parameters that we wish to specify you can click
‘Finish’ here.
7. Create two new Virtual Volumes from your template.
Note
If you select to create two VVs using the template they will be created as part of
an Autonomic Group. To create two VVs using the template that are not part of
a set each one will need to be created individually.
Objectives
After completing this lab, you should be able to perform the following tasks:
Prepare the hosts to receive storage from the InServ.
Discover the WWN for each HBA that is part of your storage environment.

11. Now ‘Export’ your RW Virtual Copy to your host system and verify that it
contains the same data as your parent volume.
Objectives
After completing the lab, you should be able to:
Tune a Virtual Volume
Requirements
The following are the requirements for performing the lab:
Access to the HP 3PAR Storage System Lab.
An assigned Storage System with username and password.
More than two CPGs on your FC disks and at least one CPG in NL.
Introduction
This lab will show you how to move a Virtual Volume to a different CPG.
4. The Recent Tasks tab will show the progress of the tune.
Objectives
After completing this lab you should be able to:
Understand what Zero Detect does for Thin Provisioning.
Verify if zero detect is enabled
Enable zero detect if it isn’t already.
Identify the space consumed on storage and compare it to the file system.
Perform a simple zeroing of deleted files using an OS tool and note the
difference on the TPVV consumed space.
Requirements
The following are the requirements to perform this lab:
Access to the HP 3PAR Storage System Lab
An assigned Storage System with username and password
Know how to use IMC.
Know how to create Thin Provisioned Virtual Volume (TPVV)
Introduction
This Lab will show you how Thin Provisioning works and how you control it.
3. Highlight the TPVV and click the Edit Icon or right mouse click Edit.
5. The Edit screen is exactly the same as when you create a TPVV.
6. Check the Advanced options box and then Next. You may see a warning
dialogue.
7. Just click Yes to continue.
Copy space
10. The advanced settings window is where you can check or set the “Zero
detect” option.
11. For the first part of this lab, we are going to use a standard TPVV “without”
Zero Detect enabled. This will show the issues with using Thin Provisioning
without Thin Persistence. If Zero Detect is already checked, uncheck it now; if
it is not checked, just cancel out of this screen.
12. The effects of Zero Detect will be demonstrated later in this exercise. Click
Next.
13. The final pane allows you to verify your setting if you made any changes click
Finish to commit the changes otherwise click Cancel to exit the wizard without
making any changes.
2. Verify the used capacity of the TPVV as you copy the files.
3. Using Windows Disk manager, format the TPVV you exported to your
windows host earlier as an NTFS LUN. The following examples illustrate a
TPVV exported to a Windows 2008 host which has been formatted and
assigned drive letter G:
4. From your class network share copy the Z:\zero folder over to your c:\temp
and open it.
5. You will see two files – zero.rar and the WinRar installer wrar37b3.exe.
Double click the installer file to install WinRar accepting all the defaults to
complete the installation.
6. Extract the .rar archive into the c:\temp\zero folder. There are 3 files
included that will be used in the following steps. The extracted files will be
copied to your InServ LUN. Do not copy the files now.
7. Copy the file named “zero_big_2g” to the TPVV on the Windows host. The
data in this file is all zeroes, similar to when a new table space is created in
a database or when an Eager Zeroed Thick VMDK is created in VMWare.
File copied
10. As you can see, we used space in the TPVV, when in reality we only want to
write actual used data to the array. The system reserves space ahead of
heavy writes to help performance so the initial Used User Size will be larger
than the required for the file
Edit pane
Copy “zero_second_2G“
Drive space
15. The OS shows that we have taken up additional 2GB of space on disk, but
this time we do not see additional capacity being used on the TPVV.
16. The following display shows used space.
17. We can also copy a 2G file that was created using random data.
Used space
19. Unlike the last file copy we do see growth in the Used User Size but the
growth isn’t a full 2GB because some of the data in the random file is zeroes.
Used space displayed.
Examining space
2. Because of the way NTFS handles files, the deletion actually causes an
increase in Used User Size.
Run sdelete
You’ll be using sdelete now so run the installation file if it’s not already installed on
your system. If you’re using the HPVL the sdelete.exe file is in the Z:\SDelete folder.
1. On Windows systems, one way to zero out the free space is to run sdelete
(Secure Delete), a utility available on Microsoft’s web site . See the command
below.
sdelete command
2. The –c tells sdelete to do a single pass zeroing of all the free space in the
filesystem. Because Windows is writing all the zeros, this can take a few
minutes to run.
3. As the sdelete command completes, your User Used Size will start to
shrink. You might have noticed that the Reserved User Size has not reduced
yet. For potential performance reasons, we hold on to space just in case the
zeroing of data is a precursor to new writes.
4. Here is a screen shot from IMC showing the values shortly after sdelete.
