1.0 INTRODUCTION

Forest survey is a type of survey of forest to determine the qualities, types of woods and number
of trees on the plot. The survey include measurement determining size, population, position,
quantity, condition and value of forest land. This course includes Forest Inventory and Forest
Mensuration knowledges. All activities allow assessment of the current status for analysis and
planning. This activity is using Traversing which consists of a series of straight lines of known
length related to one another by known angles between the lines.

2.0 OBJECTIVE
I. Provide understanding about materials used for measurement in forest surveying.
II. Measure the distance using diameter tape, compass, the uses of pole in forest surveying.
III. Measure the open traverse and closed traverse.

3.0 MATERIALS
I. 3 poles
II. Measurement tape
III. Diameter tape
IV. Clinometer
V. Compass

3
4.0 METHODS

4.1 Open Traverse

I. Prepare an open traverse with the length of 50 meters and record each 10 meters as
points and directions.
II. Measure 10 meters from the first point and record the clinometer reading.
III. The clinometer meter reading was calculated using the formula to get the correct length.
IV. All data were recorded in Table 1

4.2 Closed Traverse

I. Provide 5 points which are A, B, C, D and E.
II. Each group can start their traverse from any point given.
III. The bearing was measured using the compass to determine the direction of the point.
IV. Each point needs to be plotted using pole.
V. Using the clinometer, the corrections can be calculated to get the correct measurement.
VI. The traverse was recorded and the contour was done.

5.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

5.1 Open Traverse

Points Distance (m) Clinometer reading (°) Corrections (m)

A 10.00 +2 10.05
B 10.00 +10 10.15
C 10.00 +15 10.35
D 10.00 +0 10.00
E 10.00 -15 10.35
Table 1 : Open Traverse measurement

The open traverse was done as a straight line to make it easier to sketch the contour. The
corrections were made and recorded in Table 1. There are point A, B, C, D and E. Point C is
the highest where we need to go on the slope to get the reading. The contour was sketch to
describe the area of traverse.

5
5.2 Closed Traverse

Points Distance (m) Corrections (m) Bearing (°)

A–B 20.00 20.00 0
B–C 10.00 10.00 270
C–D 27.30 27.50 90
D–E 10.00 10.18 0
E–A 30.00 31.20 180
Table 2: Closed Traverse measurement

The point, bearing and distance between each point was given. After the activity conducted,
the corrections were made to get the accurate measurement. The distance and bearings that are
not accurate are re-measured without correcting the original bearing.

6
CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this activity shows the area that have been plotted have slopes and steep area
that need to be corrected. The corrected reading was recorded, and the sketch of contour have
been made to describe the area of slope that we have measured. These activities are the
introduction of the basic skill in forest surveying.
