ATOMIC STRUCTURE
Learning Objectives:
Key Concepts
b) the number of electrons in a neutral atom. No two elements have the same
number of protons in the nuclei of their atoms. The atomic number is also the
number of electrons in a neutral atom. While the atomic number is the same
for all atoms of an element, their atomic mass may differ.
• Atoms of same element which have different masses are called isotopes. The
isotopes of an element have different numbers of neutrons.
• The mass number of an atom is the sum of the number of protons and
electrons in the nucleus of an atom.
• An atom has a core or a nucleus that is very small. It contains all the

positive charge of the atom and most of its mass. The negatively charged
electrons move around the nucleus and occupy most of the volume of the
atom. Atoms are composed of three types of particles, namely, (1) protons, (2)
electrons and (3) neutrons. These components of the atom are called
collectively referred to as subatomic particles. Electron is negatively charged
particle and does not collapse into the positively charged nucleus. It is the
number of protons that identifies an atom. This number is the element’s
atomic number.
