INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF THE LOWLANDS OF LUZON

The Bamboo Organ, a Philippine National
Treasure, may be found in St. Joseph's
Church in Las Piñas City. It's constructed
using 902 bamboo pipes. Fr. Diego Cera
oversaw its completion in 1824. The city
hosts the International Bamboo Organ
Festival every February. The cultural event
will feature a variety of well-known foreign
and local artists. The festival's goal is to

Musikong Bumbong is a type of Filipino
marching band that employs bamboo-based
woodwind instruments. The shapes and
sizes resemble those of brass band
instruments, but the sounds are quite
different. The harmony produced by the
musikong bumbong performing together is
excellent.

the original members of the band.
The band has changed names several times,
but it is now known as Musikawayan, led by
P/Lt. Col. Gilbert M. Ramos, a fourth-
generation descendent of the band's founder.
Pangkat Kawayan, dubbed the "Philippine
Singing Bamboos," is an orchestra that
performs music on non-traditional bamboo
instruments. It has always been made up of
young children chosen from Quezon City
and Manila schools since it was founded in
1966. The musical instruments of the

each Angklung shaker. It's usually
accompanied by a double bass, guitars,
and percussion instruments to make the
sound more engaging and dynamic. To
be able to play a wide range of musical
works, the Angklung should have more
than two and a half octaves (about 30
pitches). Other ensembles, such as the
Pangkat Kawayan, can include
Angklung instruments.

The Hornbostel-Sachs technique is now used in music studies to classify
musical instruments. A system for identifying musical instruments was established
by Erich Moritz von Hornbostel (Austrian music scholar) and Curt Sachs (German
organologist).

Idiophones make music by vibrating their bodies when struck, scraped, rubbed,
shook, or plucked.

Aerophones generate sound by forcing a body of air to vibrate as a result of air

blasted inside.

Chordophones make music by vibrating a string or strings that can be plucked,

strummed, or played with a bow.

Membranophones make sound by vibrating a stretched membrane that is tapped

with hands or sticks.

Electricity generates sounds, which are produced by electrophones.
