1. Describe what social challenge you will be tackling moving forward. How
does it affect people?

Many companies are less likely to hire first time job seekers making it
harder for them to find work and fresh graduates are discriminated because
employers think that they are incompetent in the workplace having no prior
experience.

2. Who does it affect? Include statistics on the number of people affected.

The number of fresh graduates in 2022 have tripled to 1.6M since 2021
and only 400,000 had been given a chance to be hired for a job.

3. Where is the affected population? Include information on the distribution.

Companies in the Philippines tend to lower the salaries of fresh graduates


as they think these people are not worth paying high wages since they are just
starting their career with little or no experience.
4. What are the root causes, and what are the pathways by which these
causes affect this population? You can either provide a diagram here or

tackle this challenge, what has worked and what hasn’t.

People who have recently graduated from college find it extremely difficult
to obtain a stable and well-paying job, despite all the talk of an economic recovery
and a thriving job market. Filipino people are known to be committed, passionate,
and diligent at work. They strive to work hard every single day to feed their families.
But, in the Philippines, there are only a few companies that accept fresh graduates
to be qualified for a certain job position. If you have little experience, it can be
difficult to get a job.
Many companies are less likely to hire first time job seekers making it harder
for them to find work and fresh graduates are discriminated because employers
think that they are incompetent in the workplace having no prior experience. The
number of fresh graduates in 2022 have tripled to 1.6M since 2021 and only
400,000 had been given a chance to be hired for a job. Companies in the
Philippines tend to lower the salaries of fresh graduates as they think these people
are not worth paying high wages since they are just starting their career with little
or no experience.
For fresh graduates, prioritize applying to companies accepting applicants
with no experience. Most companies who are willing to hire fresh graduates as
they provide 57% of the general jobs available are in the BPO industry. They're
usually looking for someone with excellent interpersonal abilities and a desire to
learn new things for contact centers. Since the job requires them to perform such
activities while speaking with a client on the phone, the capacity to multitask is
another appealing to them. The BPO industry is no different, as most jobs out there
focus on providing services to a broad range of clients. You'd be astonished at how
much you can learn by dealing in a call center. For instance, let's say that your
ideal job is working for an airline company and that you are now managing a travel
client in a call center. As a result, you may use the knowledge you've acquired in
your chosen field when the time does come for you to follow your interest.
For employers, create a strategic approach to strengthen the skills of newly
hired fresh graduates in their designated fields. Once fresh graduates are hired in
a company, there are certain ways employers can develop their skills even without
prior job experience. For example, the company can encourage its employees to
attend training courses offered by the national or local government such as The
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provides learning and development
opportunities through its partnerships with the Philippine Center for
Entrepreneurship (PCE) and the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC).
Seminars like these are beneficial not only to the employees’ skill development but
also for the employers.
Employers should encourage college students to work part-time while
studying. The OJT training for college students is an example of this. Since the
students are involved in real-life situations in work environments, they adapt to
skills necessary for their future careers. The companies that offer OJTs may also
help you land a job with them, which is highly helpful to fresh graduates applying
for jobs without experience. However, although almost all undergraduate programs
have OJT programs, not all companies accept OJT trainees and offer them jobs.
Furthermore, employers must be receptive and welcome fresh graduates to
their business as they might contribute significant growth through their tech
savviness and ability to keep up with the latest thing in the market. They are
deemed to be risky to employ by most companies and they tend to avoid hiring
them. However, these graduates can bring growth and success to the organization
if trained well by the company. These people are great at self-learning as they are
tech-savvy, a great factor to tell that they can be helpful to the firm. Given the
privilege of knowing the ins and outs of the internet, they can easily learn by
themselves as well as bring in new and updated information. It cannot be denied
how technology is such a big help for companies nowadays and you can’t tell that
you’re a business if you don’t have any social media presence. Therefore, being a
tech-savvy company by acquiring tech-savvy employees can make you outstand
among your competitors. Additionally, fresh graduates can easily adapt to the work
environment because they don’t have awful habits. It is up to the company how it
can sculpt the employee to be the best fit for the position.
In conclusion, fresh graduates are not at all an inconvenience for companies
and there can be a way for them to meet both their demands. These job seekers
are competitive and must not be discriminated against for the fact that they don’t
have former corporate job experience.
