State Unemployment Rate Falls to 7.4 percent in July;

Total Unemployment Declines 10,400
West Virginias unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent from 8.6 percent in July,
WorkForce West Virginia reported today. The number of unemployed state residents declined
10,400 to 57,600. Total unemployment was down 11,500 over the year.
Total nonfarm payroll employment plunged 5,000, where a decline of 6,100 in the
service-providing sector overpowered a gain of 1,100 in the goods-producing sector. Despite
the considerable decline, the private sector added 1,700 jobs over the month. Employment
gains within the goods-producing sector included 700 in construction and 500 in mining and
logging. Manufacturing employment slipped 100 over the month. Within the service-providing
sector, declines were led by a seasonal loss of 6,700 in government. Other declines included
700 in financial activities and 200 in educational and health services. Employment gains
included 700 in professional and business services, 600 in trade, transportation, and utilities,
and 200 in information. Employment was unchanged in both leisure and hospitality and other
services.
Since July 2010, total nonfarm payroll employment has risen 1,300, with a gain of 1,400
in the goods-producing sector easily offsetting a decline of 100 in the service-providing sector.
Employment gains included 3,000 in educational and health services, 2,800 in professional
and business services, 2,400 in trade, transportation, and utilities, 1,700 in mining and logging,
200 in manufacturing, 200 in other services, and 100 in information. Employment declines
included 8,200 in government, 500 in construction, and 400 in financial activities. Employment
in leisure and hospitality was unchanged over the year.
We are encouraged by the addition of 1,700 jobs created in the private sector in July,
said Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. While the unemployment rate is the lowest its been in
several months, we know there are many people seeking jobs and we encourage them to use
the services of WorkForce West Virginia to help them re-enter employment.
West Virginias seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined four-tenths of a
percentage point to 8.1 percent, while the national rate inched downward one-tenth of a
percentage point to 9.1 percent.
Note: Unemployment information for West Virginia is prepared through the Local Area Unemployment
Statistics program, a national federal/state cooperative program of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S.
Department of Labor. Unemployment information for West Virginia has been approved by the Bureau of
Labor Statistics.
