Astm Irc Codes Summary Outline
Scope - The mix design of OGFC is based on volumetric properties of asphalt mixture in terms
of air voids and presence of stone to stone contact.
Terminology –
Air voids – Va the total volume of small pockets of air between coated aggregate particles
throughout a compacted mixture, expressed as percent of the total volume of compacted
specimen.
Maximum aggregate size, MAS – The smallest sieve size opening through which entire amount
of aggregate is required to pass.
NMAS – The sieve that retain 10% material, and allow 90 % material to pass though it.
OGFC –special type of asphalt surface mixture used for reducing the hydroplaning and potential
for skidding, where function of asphalt mixture is to provide a free draining layer that permits
surface water to migrate laterally through asphalt mixture to the edge of pavement.
Stabilizing additive- polymer, fibers, crumb rubber used to meet the minimum drain-down
requirement of mix during transport and placement.
Voids in coarse aggregate (VCA) – The volume in between the coarse aggregate particles, where
this volume include filler, fine aggregate, air voids, asphalt and fiber.
Material Selection – Asphalt, aggregates, and additives that meet the specifications are selected.
Select the optimum Grading – Grading should be on the basis of volume. The dry rodded unit
weight for coarse aggregate for each trial grading is determined with test method C29/C29M.
Initial asphalt content is 6-6.5%. compact the specimen with 50 blows on both sides using
superpave gyratory.
Evaluate the moisture susceptibility – AASHTO T 283 (use liquid anti-strip or hydrated lime)
Selection of material – Coarse aggregate with abrasion value less than 30%, must have at least
90% with two faces. D5821
The % of flat and elongated particles should not exceed 10%, with ratio of 5:1 in maximum to
minimum dimension. D4791
