Module 2- INSTILL AND APPLY

INTELLECTUAL REVOLUTIONS THAT DEFINED SOCIETY

INSTILL:

1. Search for one contributor to modern science.

Ang Idol kong Scientist: Frederick Grant Banting

Frederick Grant Banting never knew he was on the road to saving countless
lives as he discovered a treatment for diabetes which led him to his
accomplishments.

Frederick Grant Banting was born November 14, 1891 in Alliston, Ontario. He
was a Canadian medical scientist, physician, painter, and Nobel laureate noted as the
co-discoverer of insulin and its therapeutic potential. Initially Banting was dedicated
to politics but later decided to shift to medicine. In 1916 he completed his MD and
during the World War I worked as a doctor. He was very interested in diabetes and
continuously worked on a cure for it. Banting searched for cure for diabetes together
with Dr. Charles Best. In 1923 the researcher was awarded with the Nobel Prize for
discovering “Insulin”.

I chose Frederick Banting as my “Idol kong Scientist” because as someone

who has a diabetic relative, I could prove that his discovery leads to a huge help to
those people who are suffering from diabetes. The discovery of Insulin has changed
the entire world and has given hope to all diabetic patient. Before insulin was
discovered, people with diabetics ended up dying. But now with the availability of
insulin diabetic patients live a normal life.
APPLY:

1. How do discoveries impact the life of people in modern times?

The wide variety of discoveries produced by humanity has led to the
development of our civilization, stimulated economic growth and raise people’s
standard of living. If you think these discoveries doesn’t matter much to you, think
again. It affects us all, from the moment we wake up, all day long and through the
night. Your digital clock, the weather reports, mobile phones, antibiotic for your
illness and many more. To sum it up, these discoveries improves the quality of our
lives. It opens the door and allows people to enter into a new world which is fully
developed and well civilized.

2. What would have happened to humankind if technology did not exist?

Without technologies, humankind will remain at its steady position wherein
changes and development are not present. Our way of thinking and surviving might
not develop without the help of technology since it paves way to the introduction of
new technology that could make our life way easier. For example with today’s
situation, without technology we might now be struggling on our online classes
amidst Covid-19. Students can take quizzes and exams more easily and teachers are
able to hold online classes very effective. But most important without technology,
doctors and front liners will struggle to help in this situation.

3. Discuss whether technology is a means to an end or an end in itself.

I believe that technology is a means to an end because first of all technology
was invented to make a huge changes in our society. These are the pertinent point
on my stand:
- Technology become such an integral part of our lives.
- Over time, many things that were once done by hand or in person have
come to managed through the use of technology.
- Technology become a way to help inventors and researchers to produce a
quality innovations/ discoveries.
