1.0 SYNOPSIS

This is one of the core courses for students in Business Mathematics, Industrial Statistics, Decision
Science and Education (minor Mathematics) undergraduate programmes. The course is designed to
provide the basic concepts and techniques of linear algebra needed to solve and classify systems of
linear equations. Solution techniques include Gaussian elimination, inverse of matrix and matrix
algebra. Also covered is an investigation of the properties of vectors in two and three dimensions,
leading to the generalized notion of vector space. Theories of vector space are presented including
topics such as basis, inner products, orthogonality, eigenspaces and linear transformations.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to

2.1 describe basic concepts of linear algebra.
2.2 recognize and apply appropriate techniques for solving system of linear equations.
2.3 write basic prove in linear algebra.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to

3.1 describe the basic concepts of Linear Algebra covered in this course (C2, A1).
3.2 perform operations on matrices and vectors (C3, A2, P2).
3.3 solve a linear system using inverse of matrix, Cramer’s rule, Gauss, Gauss Jordan elimination
and software (C3, A4, P2).
3.4 prove basic results of vector space by analyzing the solution of a linear system (C4, A3).
