Micrometers

I. Draw the following micrometers:

a.) Direct-reading micrometer

b.) Large-frame micrometer
c.) Mul-T-Anvil micrometer
d.) Indicating micrometer
e.) Digi-Matic micrometer
f.) Screw thread micrometer

II. REVIEW QUESTIONS

Micrometers
1. How many threads per inch are there on a standard inch micrometer?
 There are 40 threads per inch on a standard inch micrometer.

2. What is the value of :

a.) Each line on the sleeve?
The value of each line on the sleeve is 0.0001.
b.) Each number line on the line?
The value of each number line on the line is 0.100.
c.) Each line on the thimble?
The value f each on the thimble is 0.001

3. Describe briefly the principle of the vernier micrometer.

The vernier micrometer used to determine the more accurate reading. The vernier
scale of the vernier micrometer consists of 10 divisions that run parallel to and above
the index line, each division has a value of .0001 in.

4. Describe the procedure for reading a vernier micrometer.

In reading the vernier micrometer, first look for the number above the line and
multiply by .100, then count the visible line that past the number and multiply
to .025, after count the line on the thimble just past the index line and multiply
to .001, and last count the line on the vernier scale coincides with a line on the
thimble and multiply it to .0001. After you get all the value, add the all the value to
get the total reading.

5. Explain how to adjust a micrometer:

a. To remove play in the spindle threads.

To adjust or remove the spindle thread, first back off the thimble, after that insert the C-
spanner or the spindle screw into the slot or hole of the adjusting nut and then turn the
adjusting nut clockwise until play between the threads has been eliminated. After
micrometer has been adjusted, the spindle should advance freely while the ratchet stop or
friction thimble is being turned.
b. For accuracy.
To adjust a micrometer for accuracy, first clean the measuring faces and inspect them for
damage after close the measuring faces carefully by turning the ratchet stop or friction
thimble then insert the C-spanner into the hole or slot provided in the sleeve after that
carefully turn the sleeve until the index line on the sleeve coincides with the zero line on the
thimble and last recheck the accuracy of the micrometer by opening the micrometer and then
closing the measuring faces by turning the ratchet stop or friction thimble.

Metric Micrometers

6. What are the basic differences between a metric and an inch micrometer?
 Their basic differences is that each line of metric micrometer is measured using mm while
in inch micrometer is using inch(in).

7. What are the value of one division on:

a. The sleeve above the index line?
 The value is 0.55mm.
b. The sleeve below the index line?
 The value below the index line is 1mm.
c. The thimble?
 The value is 0.01.

Indicating Micrometers

8. State two uses for an indicating micrometer.

The two uses of indicating micrometer is, first it use for indicating dial and a movable anvil to
permit accurate measurements to ten-thousandths of an inch (0.002 mm). Second this
micrometer use as a comparator by setting it to a particular size with gage blocks or a standard
and locking the spindle.
Screw Thread Micrometers

9. Describe the construction of the contact

points of a screw thread micrometer.
Screw thread micrometer has a pointed spindle and
a double-V swivel anvil, which is equal to the
outside diameter less the depth of one thread.
10.What dimension of the thread is indicated on
a screw thread micrometer reading?
The thread indicates on a screw thread micrometer reading is the thread pitch diameter.

11.List four ranges covered by screw thread micrometers.

1. 8 to 13 TPI
2. 14 to 20 TPI
3. 22 to 30 TPI
4. 32 to 40 TPI
12. How many threads be measured accurately with a screw thread micrometer?
 Zero thread
