Battle of Al Mesaimeer
1850

Faisal bin Turki, second ruler of second Saudi


state decided to annex Qatar to his kingdom
after the establishment of the second Saudi
state. In 1850, he led a campaign against Qatar
in a battle known as Mesaimeer, during which
Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Althani arose as
a strong leader and a watershed moment in
Qatar’s history. The entire country rallied
behind their leader Sheikh Jassim at the Battle
of Mesaimeer, abandoning tribal allegiances in
favor of a unified country under one flag. This Battle of Damsa
is when Qatar’s current flag was adopted. The 1867
battle ended with the defeat of the Saudi
forces and the signing of a peace treaty In June 1867 the battle of Damsa had
(Althani, 2012). occurred in sea between Qatari tribes
and Bahraini troops to revenge Bahrain
for trying to imprison Sheikh Jassim bin
Mohammed. The battle occurred
because the people of Qatar tried to ask
the prince of Riyadh to help them
against the Al-Khalifa, and the prince of
Bahrain found out about this and
prepared his troops to attack the Qataris
and when Sheikh Jassim heard of this
attack he went to apologize to the prince
of Bahrain. The battle ended with Qatar
losing with 1000 deaths and 60 ships
(Lorimer, 2019).
Battle of Jebel Al Wakrah
1868

The battle of Jebel Al Wakrah took place in


1868, following their defeat at Damsa. The
Qatari forces retreated to Al Wakrah,
where they were met by Bahraini forces.
The Qatari troops battled and defeated the
Bahraini army; afterwards, the Qatari
forces captured Sheikhs from the Bahraini
royal family Al Khalifa. This triumph
resulted in the release of Qatar's leader,
Sheikh Jassim, who had been imprisoned in
Bahrain, as well as Qatar's independence
from Bahrain (Althani, 2012).

Battle of Doha Ruins


1888

The Battle of Doha Ruin was initiated by Abu


Dhabi forces led by Khalifa bin Zayed
Alnahyan, the eldest son of the ruler of Abu
Dhabi. In 1888, the attack occurred during
Ramadan, one of the holiest months of the
year. The attack occurred while Qatari forces
were in Al Daayen with the founder Sheikh
Jassim, Sheikh Ali and Sheikh Thani sons of
Sheikh Jassim were in Doha where the battle
took place which was led by Sheikh Ali also
known as Joan fighting against Abdu Dhabi
forces. The battle ended with Sheikh Ali's
death and the destruction and ruin of Doha
Battle of Al Wajbah city (Ibrahim and Alsaqi, 2017).
1893

A battle took place at Alwajbah between


Qatari troops with their leader Sheikh
Jassim Althani and the Governor of Basra's
forces. Ottoman officials initiated the
conflict by imprisoning 16 Qatari tribal
leaders and ordered troops to march
toward the Al Thani stronghold. The fight
arose as a result of Sheikh Jassim's refusal
to come to Ottoman authority and not
accepting the imposition of taxes on the
sale of pearls. The conflict resulted in the
deaths of Joseph Effendi, leader of the
Ottoman forces, and Wali Mohammed
Hafez fleeing (Rahman, 2010).
