Learning Outcome(s): HE 1.14 List various lifestyle diseases and discuss some factors that may cause them.
HE 1.15 Examine various ways infectious diseases are transmitted and identify
strategies for
prevention.
HE 1.16 Discuss the importance of vaccinations in preventing and controlling certain
diseases.

Content Objective(s): Through the use of a video and concept chart, students will be able to:
1. Identify what infection diseases are
2. Explain what causes infectious diseases
3. complete a quiz with at least 80% pass

Concept(s)/Content: What are Infectious Diseases?


Infectious diseases are disorders caused by
organisms — such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or
parasites. Many organisms live in and on our
bodies. They're normally harmless or even helpful.
But under certain conditions, some organisms may
cause disease.

Infectious diseases can be any of the following:


• Chickenpox.
• Common cold.
• Diphtheria.
• E. coli.
• Giardiasis.
• HIV/AIDS.
• Infectious mononucleosis.
• Influenza (flu)
There are numerous reasons why Vaccination is
important. Some of which includes:
Vaccination is very safe and effective.
Immunizations protect others you care about.
Immunizations can save your family time and
money.

Skills & Disposition (Attitudes): Discuss importance of vaccination


Participate in class and group discussion.
Display appreciation for the awareness of infectious diseases.
Respect others’ opinion.

Procedures for Lesson/Learning Strategies:


Introduction:
Engage/ Explore
 Have students close their eyes and imagine that they are standing with a few
friends.
 One of their friends suddenly sneeze without covering his or her mouth.
 Elicit what could possibly happen to remaining friends.
 Students will share their answers.

Development:
Explain/ Elaborate
 Review what the term infectious disease is
 Have them do Turn and Talk with their shoulder partner
 have students view a short video clipped on Infectious Diseases.
 list examples of infectious diseases.
 Engage students in class discussion
 Display a concept chart on infectious diseases and examples will be presented
that teacher and students will go through.
Have students discuss the following questions:

o What causes infectious diseases?


o What are some examples of infectious diseases?
o How are infectious diseases transmitted from person to person?

Conclusion:

Why are vaccination important?


vaccination throughout childhood is essential because it helps provide immunity before
children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. Vaccines are tested to
ensure that they are safe and effective for children to receive at the recommended ages.

Introduction:
Engage/ Explore
 Give one volunteer a flashcard with instructions
 Have the volunteer act sick: sneeze, cough, and other symptoms
 Elicit from students what is wrong with him/her
 Probe students to tell you the different diseases they might have
 Probe students to state how they can catch and prevent the disease

Development:
Explain/ Elaborate
 The word “Vaccination” will be presented to students.
 Elicit from students what do they think is the definition of the word.
 Allow students to share
 Show students a syringe without the needle
 Have volunteers pretend to give each other a shot
 The class will be engaged in a short discussion about the word “vaccination.”
 Show students a short video entitled “How do Vaccines Help Babies?”
 Have students list examples of why vaccinations are important.
