Basic Productivity Presentation Tool

Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: by Gabby Eldridge

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st Grade, Properties of matter

Content Standard Addressed:
PS1.A Structure and Properties of Matter
● Different kinds of matter exist (e.g., wood, metal, water), and many of them can be either solid or
liquid, depending on temperature.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and
be able to do by the end of this lesson:

learning outcomes.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The student learning goal for my lesson is “To compare and describe states of matter using
technological tools (PowerPoint)”.
Selected Basic Productivity Tool: PowerPoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I plan to share my PowerPoint book story to my class to express how I would like them to
create their own PowerPoint story. I will introduce the story by excitedly asking them if any of
them had created their own story before, and what they wrote about. After asking them to
chat with their neighbors for a few minutes, I will then tell them I wrote a story just for them.
I will then explain that the story I wrote follows our learning target and standard- Explaining
the properties of matter and how they can change. I will then ask the students to raise their
hand if they wanted to share any information about the topic/learning standard that they
already know. After that, I would encourage them to watch my PowerPoint story that I wrote
about our learning goal. In the video, I am speaking slowly and carefully so they can hear me
clearly. After the PowerPoint presentation, I will ask the students to take out their provided
computers/laptops/devices and pull up PowerPoint. I will assist them in reaching the
productivity tool if they are struggling individually. I will also encourage students who
understand PowerPoint to help their neighbors kindly. Next, I would explain the steps of
creating a PowerPoint clearly with instructions written on the board and a projection of a
blank PowerPoint on the board for everyone to see as I follow my own steps. At the very end,
I will check all my students progress and ask them to see if they understood the steps to
creating the PowerPoint tool. By the end of the lesson, I will then teach them how to use the
voice recording to present, and I will also allow students who prefer to speak to the class to
use that option instead (while still teaching how to perform that). I will encourage them for
their efforts throughout the lesson.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?

Lesson Idea

I could use this technology to get students thoroughly involved and actively learning in their
tasks by creating true scenarios the kids could experience when I give them their individual
directions when walking around the class to talk to them about their stories; inspiring ideas
that relate to their interests, such as the relating the standard of properties of matter to an
important holiday they love; or a family memory that can involve their learning goal of
explaining the states of matter. Then, using their PowerPoint tool, I could ask them to create
their story mixing their interests or real experiences with their learning target to create a
captivating story for themselves and their peers. They could also work in pairs for inspiration
or when they get lost using the PowerPoint tool, and I will always be present as an option for
assistance. They will spend a certain amount of time working on creating a script for their
stories (15 minutes) using whichever tools they want to use, a certain amount of time
creating their PowerPoint slides for their book (adjustable according to students’ needs and
abilities but roughly 40 minutes), and time for them to record their voices (optional). I will
give them a limit for the number of slides to produce (4-5 slides).

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The technology tool (PowerPoint) I selected for this lesson idea supports all students by
allowing accommodations, options, and creativity through their learning experience. The
lesson allows students to create their own stories with whichever personal ideas and
imaginative scenarios they build mentally while using the PowerPoint tool to express those
ideas and their gained knowledge from the standard/learning target. For students who have
learning disabilities or lack of prior knowledge in technology, I am there to gently scaffold
their steps and assist them in their use of the productivity tool. I also will allow extra time for
students who need more accommodations to think and work longer on their PowerPoint
projects. The tool supports the Representation component of the UDL framework by
incorporating a means of expression and a clear perspective of their comprehension within
their produced work of their PowerPoint stories that are centered around their learning
target while allowing their own creative input.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I believe that the activity and scaffolding I use in my lesson will impact my student learning by
emboldening their confidence in using productivity tools to share their viewpoints and
knowledge, and to learn how to best review their comprehension. I believe I will look forward
to teaching more creative and accessible ways for my students to embrace their creativity
and broadcast their knowledge using other productivity tools during class lessons.
