Difference between rays
and skates
• Invertebrates are animals that do not have
backbones or vertebral column.

• Invertebrates make up roughly 95% of all

animals on Earth, while vertebrates make up
only 5%.
Cnidarians
• The Cnidarians include the hydras, jellyfish, anemones, and corals. All
Cnidarians have tentacles with stinging cells in their tips which are used to
capture and subdue prey. In fact, the phylum name "Cnidarian" literally
means "stinging creature."
- These are worms with flat
and ribbon-like bodies.

- These worms have long, smooth, and

rounded bodies that often have rings,
bristles, or ridges that aid in
locomotion or protection.

- These worms have long,

segmented bodies.

Some do not have shells at all like garden and
sea slugs.
Arthropods
• Arthropods from the largest group
of any organism, which can be
found in freshwater, marine, and
terrestrial habitats.

• Some of them are even able to fly.

• All arthropods have a hard outer

body covering called exoskeleton,
jointed legs, segmented body,
compound eyes, and specialized
body parts.
Crustaceans
• 2 pairs of antennae and bodies
divided into 2 regions
• They have gills for breathing.
• Their exoskeletons are very hard.

• Well-known crustaceans are

shrimps, crabs, and lobster.
Arachnids
• They live on land with two body
regions like crustaceans.
• They have 4 pairs of legs.
• They breathe through their
trachea or book lungs.

• Spider, mites, ticks, and

scorpions belong in this group.
Myriapods
• They live hidden in the soil,
underneath rocks, and dead
logs, which include centipedes
and millipedes.

• Centipedes are carnivorous and

have poisonous fangs in their
mouth, while millipedes feed on
dead plant and animal matter.
Insects
• This is the largest group of
arthropods with a body
composed of 3 regions.
• They may have one to two pairs
of wings.
• Insects breathe through a
network of tubes called
tracheae.
• They also have antennae for
chemical perception.
